Hostelz.com's Review
Kunming Upland International Youth Hostel is a nice and relaxed hostel -- the building is excellent and the rooms are really comfortable. A great location in the city center within walking distance from the main interesting sights makes it a perfect pick for whomever stops in the city. The bar is really nice, with good meals for an average price and has a pleasant outside esplanade. There is free Wi-Fi in the whole building. The bad thing about the hostel is that Kunming city has been in a shortage of water and most times, the hostel doesn't have any water available –- sometimes only for two hours at the end of the day.

The Location

The hostel is located in the city centre, just two hundred meters from the Green Lake and ten minutes from the birds and flower market. This hostel can provide you all the information on how to get to the hostel from the main entrance points of the city –- airport, train station, and bus stations. The area is really quiet -– but safe -– outside rush hours. If you arrive by car, there are very limited spots to park a car near the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel has an elevator to the floor of the dorms. The rooms are big enough for the number of beds. The bunks are new, with good comfort. There are lockers available in the rooms, but you need to bring your own lock. There are shared bathrooms on every floor and you can find plenty of Western toilets in the hostel. There are enough hooks and shelves for you to hang your clothes in the showers. Don't forget that with the shortage of water supply in Kunming city, this hostel doesn't have water available during most of the day -- this means no water for shower or toilets (there is a reservoir that allows you to brush your teeth in the morning). Before booking, check if this situation remains.

Common Spaces

The reception is a cozy place that will show the good state of the building, with a glass roof to the exterior on top of it. There is also a bar in the hostel with free Wi-Fi and nice meals for an average price and with a pleasant esplanade in the outside. Some nights, the bar staff organize tournaments of darts, chess, and pool, and give prizes to the winners, which allow you to get to know other travelers and share some experiences. There is free Wi-Fi in all the common areas.

Summary

This is a nice hostel that is very well located and has excellent facilities. The reception can help you with all the information you need to explore the area and to move on to another city in your trip. The staff speak very good English and are very helpful. If the problem with the water is solved, this is probably one of the most comfortable hostels you can find in China and the prices aren't excessive.

2   Ok but didnt meet our expectation The location is great but when you check in the receptionist are not that friendly but at least they speak english. They can book for you train tickets or else and help you with the direction but don't expect more than you ask. Regarding the room it s a bit completed to get there (4 stairways+walk trough the bar then the garden) then when you get in it is a bit disappointing. The wall paper is unsticking with a lot of humidity. As it was winter the very negative point was that there were no heating -- very same temperature out/indoor so quite freezing. Still electric blanket provided. Food and drink were ok and good mix of asians and westerners.  , age 20, belgium ()
4   Fine hostel Excellent location, nice staff, legitimately homemade food in the pub. The breakfast was ok but I'd recommend getting out and going to the French Café, which is excellent. We stayed in a double private room which I think was a bit overpriced. For the price I would have preferred either staying in a cheap Chinese chain hotel or just paying a bit more and staying in a nice hotel. Not much conversation in the pub -- everyone is playing with their phone or iPad. Hosteling has changed since I was younger.  , age 32 ()
4   Very helpful Good environment, clean and very warm like stay at home. I have request delayed check in until mid night (after 12 mid night, around 2am morning), they still reserve for us.  , Malaysian ()
4   Nice hostel close to the Green Lake In total we stayed there three times for several days. The twin rooms are more spacious than the doubles, try to avoid rooms on the first floor or close to the elevator. Unfortunately, the last time we went there our room was a bit humid with fungus on the walls and we couldn't get another room. We had the impression that the hostel is very well booked both by Chinese and international travelers. A big plus is the restaurant and attached bar (big range of German beer) and the room gets crowded quickly during breakfast and dinner time. The menu has both Chinese and Western dishes including delicious breakfast. It only sometimes takes about 30 minutes to get a coffee or tea in the morning. There's also a backyard to sit outside and an upstairs room with computers. The Wifi was a bit shaky but if it works it's also available in the rooms. The staff speaks English and can provide you information about buses, trains and day trips. We never had a taxi driver who found the way to the hostel (even with the map provided by the hostel) therefore we always asked them to drop us off at the Green Lake Hotel and walked 5 min to the Upland.  , Germany ()
5   The best China can offer This hostel is cheap, well situated, the common rooms are beautiful, the kids running thr bar are smart and nice, the bed sheets are the most comfortable and the city of Kunming is one of the best in China. Aside from the grossly overpriced bar/restaurant and some of the receptionists' attitude, this place is great.  , Canada ()
