The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Manderscheid - Vulkaneifel-Jugendherberge, Jugendgästehaus Manderscheid/Eif is close enough to walk through town to the museum and a bit of a walk to the castle. There are lots of gorgeous hiking trails in the vicinity.
Location
This hostel is located in a building at the far end of the main street in town -- it's very easy to find and there is lots of parking. It has three floors of rooms in an older, school-like building.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The room, which has bunk beds, is small but it is cool to have your own bathroom. Everything is clean. We did have to go down to the check-in desk to get towels and soap, as there were none in the room. The front desk attendant did not speak English -- luckily there was another guest who translated.
During our stay, we were placed across the hall from a school group -- this puzzled us, since there was a whole second floor for only four other adult guests. But the students were quieted by 10 p.m. and the running in halls stopped. However, other guests continued drinking and smoking outside our window until midnight -- it seems no one is in charge to enforce standards (we couldn't find anyone on duty).
Common Spaces
There is a playground as well as ping pong tables set up outside during the day. During the morning exit routine, the guests are expected to take all linens outside to laundry carts before checking out. No one explained this to us earlier, so we had to make several trips up to the room.
Breakfast is ok. They seat you with name cards (we had our own table in the back of the room) -- a very nice touch. We tried to get there a bit early to avoid the rush.
Summary
Overall we liked the room, but we would not stay at this hostel again, as the staff aren't available and this makes us feel uneasy.
