Location
There is no train service to Bollendorf. From Diekirch, Luxembourg, take the N17 east for about 2 miles. At the roundabout, turn onto the N10 and take it for 12 miles just past Bollendorf-Pont. Turn left and cross the bridge into Germany. Once in town, get ready to climb! Take the Neuerburger Strasse about 3 blocks, then turn right onto Altstrasse. Go one block and take a sharp right onto Im Wingert. Follow it straight, it turns into Auf dem Deich. After one more block turn left on Auf der Ritschlay, the hostel is on your left. There's a shortcut back into town down Kirchstrasse, but it's probably best to take only on foot because of its steep grade.
Amenities
This hostel is a godsend for tardy travelers. Although the reception is only open until 8pm, the on-site bistro is open until 11pm and they can also check you in. The bistro itself has a wide selection of snacks and beverages, which is good because there are not self-serving kitchens in the hostel. You'll also find a variety of activities there, such as pool tables and even old pinball machines. The bedrooms, like the rest of the hostel, are clean and modern, not much of a surprise when visiting Germany. Beds usually number four to a room, with an ensuite shower and toilet for each room. If you're hungry in the morning, you will most likely be satisfied with a hearty German breakfast that includes cheese and cold cuts in addition to the more standard fare of cereals, fruit, milk and coffee.
Atmosphere
The staff is super friendly at the hostel, willing to go the extra mile with the little things such as washing out personal items like water bottles. This hostel is popular with chaperoned youth groups, and as such has a very busy feel to it when they're in town. Most likely you'll draw a room and shower separate from these groups, thus gaining any needed privacy. Breakfasts can be busy affairs with such large groups, but the hostel has several dining rooms and will most likely set aside one just for the youth group, so no worries there, either.
Attractions
Perched on the Sauer River across the border from Luxembourg, Bollendorf is in a scenic area of winding rivers and steep bluffs (pictured). Day trips to Vianden, the Chateau Beaufort (also pictured), Echternach (also pictured), Trier, the Gorge du Loup, and the Mosel Valley are all doable from this location. And what's to stop you from visiting the city of Luxembourg and its impressive winding valley-and-bluff setting?
Price
The price at this hostel is reasonable when compared with others in the surrounding area, and it's definitely cheaper than hotel options in this part of Germany and Luxembourg.
Overall Value
This hostel is a good value and makes a great stop for those who want to see the wonderful Sauer valley and its surroundings!
