The Hostelz.com Review
Trek Global is a relatively new hostel in the heart of Wellington. Its central location and modern facilities make it a great location for exploring Wellington.

The Location

Trek Global is located a short, five-minute walk from the waterfront and about twenty minutes from the railway station, Oriental Bay, and Mt. Victoria. It's a bit difficult to find if you're coming from Willis Street, since the street sign is hidden by a sign advertising a car park. Just know that O'Reily Street is right between St. Mary's Cathedral and the parking lot, and that the hostel is at the end of the short street. Buses run frequently, but its central location means that the bus is generally not necessary for exploring the city. Since it's slightly away from the busy streets, it's relatively quiet in terms of street noise and traffic.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are very secure, with new locks on the doors as well as lockers within the rooms that you can use if you bring your own lock. The dorms have six beds (three bunk beds, which may be a little too close together). The rooms with four or fewer beds, however, have a decent amount of space in them. There are several options, ranging from a six-bed dorm to a private, single one. Wi-Fi is available in the rooms for a fee.

The bathrooms are made up of individual rooms each holding one toilet and one shower. They are spacious, clean, and modern. The showers have good pressure and plenty of hot water. Unfortunately, there are no soap dishes or places to hang our place your clothes while you shower. Also, there are approximately three showers for each floor, which, when some floors hold up to thirty people, isn't quite enough.

Common Spaces

Each floor has a small miniature kitchen, which can fit about six people total, but only two people if they are seriously cooking. The kitchen also has lockers with locks if you want to leave your food in there. There is a main kitchen on the ground floor with long tables and plenty of cooking space. There is a lounge by the reception area, which has a few couches and some iPads; however, the main common room is located right off the reception area. It has a book exchange (which is rather small right now since the hostel is new, but the quantity of shelves proves that they hope it grows larger), TV, couches, bean bags, and tables. Off the common room there are two small outdoor areas, which are primarily used for talking and smoking (which can blow up into your dorm room if the wind is strong enough and the window is open).

The hostel is quite large, so you get a wide variety of people. There are several people who like to stay up late drinking and talking, but there are also people who enjoy simply relaxing in the common room and chatting over some coffee. The floors and rooms can get hot, and cigarette smoke can blow up into the bedrooms, but otherwise the facilities are very clean and modern.

Summary

Despite a few minor inconveniences, this hostel boasts a great location, great facilities, and great security. It is also registered with BBH, so discounts are available. This is a great hostel in the heart of Wellington.

1   Worst backpacker ever Poor management, mistakenly thought that I have checked out and cleaned all my stuff. My luggage was found in rubbish bin. Worst thing was they deny it by telling me that the general manger was not there, so they couldn't do anything.  , NZ ()
