Hostelz.com's Review
Kayun Hostel is located right in the heart of Kuta, a few blocks from the beach. While it is within walking distance to everything, Kayun offers a quieter, classier hostel stay in crazy loud and always-bustling Kuta.

The Location

We came to Kayun in a taxi from the Kuta airport; the taxi driver knew the hostel and was able to get to it easily.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel itself is quite modern. The dorm rooms have a modern, loft-style feel to them, as there is dim lighting and a lot of concrete used. Despite this seemingly cold use of material, the beds themselves are extremely comfortable and the hostel gives off more of cool, modern feel as opposed to a cold, industrial feel.

There are numerous private rooms at Kayun as well as a sixteen-bed, mixed dorm and a ten-bed female dorm. The dorm rooms are spacious and air conditioned, albeit a bit dark even when all the lights are on. The beds are bunk style, but the beds are not traditional bunk beds. Each bed, both top and bottom, has a cement slab on top of which is a mattress. The mattresses are substantial and quite comfortable. Pillows, linens, and a blanket are also provided. Each bunk space has its own light, shelf, power point, and hook with hanger. The rooms are securely locked and require a card for access. Ample locker space is provided under the beds.

The bathrooms also have the loft-like feel, as they are dimly lit and made mostly of concrete. The showers do not have great water pressure, but are hot. There are paper towels available at the sinks, but no other toiletry items are provided. The showers are large enough in which to change clothes and has hooks to hang a towel and clothes.

Common Spaces

The main common space at Kayun encompasses the reception desk, an area with tables and chairs and an area with a sofa and coffee table. This area is completely covered, but open to the outside, both at the front on the street side and at the back where the pool is. Breakfast, complimentary with the stay, is served in this area. The breakfast is quite substantial -- coffee, tea, juice, bread, fruit, and hard-boiled eggs (the tea and coffee is available all day). This main common area is a comfortable place to hang out and provides an opportunity to meet other travelers, but overall this is not a party hostel and is otherwise rather quiet. Drinks are available for purchase at reception and food available for purchase after breakfast hours. Bus tickets to everywhere in Bali can be purchased at reception and motorbikes are available for rent.

Kayun also offers a gorgeous pool in the backyard -- it is clean and surrounded by modern-style lounge chairs and a small amount of green space.

Summary

Overall, Kayun is an excellent option for Kuta, especially if you are not looking for a classic party hostel. Kuta's crazy nightlife is within walking distance, so Kayun offers the best of both worlds.
