The Park House hostel is in a lovely large old building which was previously a private house and is still run by family members of the ones who lived there and still own it.
Mossel Bay is a small town and this hostel is within five minutes' walk of the high street, with the harbour being a further few minutes' walk. Immediately across the road behind the hostel is a park which its garden overlooks. It is in a residential area down a cul-du-sac with street parking infront of the property.
There is a dorm room and several private rooms. The dorm has four bunk beds, which is in a long room with rustic wooden furniture and polished wooden floors. Nearby is the shower room with WC and sink, and next to this is a bathroom. There is also a bathroom with WC and sink on the ground floor next to the kitchen.
Behind the front door is the reception area and travel centre, with internet access and a WC and sink. There are private rooms above this. Behind this room is a centre garden with the main house on the other side. In here is a dining area with large table and chairs and at the other end of the room is a TV and sofas. Off here is a smaller seating area with a bar in there. The kitchen is at the front which is fairly average size with all amenities, and a further storage room. On the outside at the side is a seating area with barbeque and swing seats. At the front of the property is a large garden with tables and chairs on the grass, as well as tables and chairs on the verandeh, as this was originally the front of the house.
The house is very nice, kept clean and in nice condition. It seems a bit barren, with small sociable rooms which prevent it getting too sociable. The couple who run this are friendly and treat the guests as friends, although this can get a bit creepy at times. They also supply plenty of drinks and keep offering to cook for you as if you are staying with friends - that is until you find the bill is maybe more than anticipated! It is more suited as a guest house than a hostel. However, the location, amenities and condition of the house make it a great place to stay in Mossel Bay.
