I liked this place so much I took a job and stayed on free through the summer of '81. At that time, I was a relatively untravelled 18-year-old Irishman and I drank in the stories told me by visitors and the breathtaking landscape. For drinking of a different kind, there was an extraordinary beer garden a few miles away, featuring jazz bands from the U.S. and frequented by members of the German secret service on R&R from their not-so-secret base in the area. Agents appeared at the hostel on a professional basis when an Israeli youth sports team came to stay and needed guarding. As to the place itself, well, it's a castle for God's sake, need I say more? It sits amid a quaint looking village, which wouldn't look out of place in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. The castle is positioned atop a valley overlooking a tree-lined river and it's within easy commuting distance of Munich. If I'm remembering correctly, it took about 29 minutes on a train line that terminated at Wolfrathausen. Get out there and have a look for yourself — an unusual and fascinating place. — Nick Moroney (2005-06-16)

The food was very good, but the hostel was undergoing renovations. But the new family rooms were excellent. — Andrea (2004-02-29)
