Hostelz.com's Review

Explora Hostels is clean and reasonably spacious, attracting a friendly backpacker crowd. In an area with many options, you will be surprised to see that it prices itself cheaper than some of its rivals -- the hostel certainly delivers on value for money.

The Location

Located in the heart of La Candelaria (the old town), Explora Hostels is perfectly situated to explore the city. The main museums and other sights are ten minutes' walk away, and there are a number of bars and restaurants even closer. There are a couple of stops for TransMilenio (Bogotá's extensive bus network) only a couple of blocks away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are big, with adequate space for all guests. Inside the dorms are a couple of small design flaws that could hinder a good night's sleep -- the wooden bunk beds can be very creaky and the reading light for each bed is incredibly bright, illuminating the whole room, rather than serving as a personal aid. The lockers, however, are excellent -- located under the bed and secured with a padlock, they are easily big enough for your big backpack. The bathrooms are small and the number of toilets just about serves for the whole hostel. Showers deliver hot water on demand at excellent pressure.

Common Spaces

The main common area is at the back of the hostel, where a number of tables and chairs make a good social space to meet people throughout the day. Unfortunately, the hostel does have a draconian rule that you are not allowed to bring your own alcohol. Instead, you are forced to pay above the odds from their fridge, which is always well stocked with a number of different brands of beer and soft drinks. Two communal computers are available in this space and are free to use.

The kitchen is pretty abysmal, especially given the size of the hostel -- that is probably why we never saw anyone cooking while we were there. There is no oven, but a simple camping stove. The fridge is smaller than a domestic fridge and is always so jam-packed with food that it is impossible to add anything. The actual area is cramped with just one person in there, so any attempts at cooking with your fellow guests would be impossible.

Summary

Explora is a good sized, clean, modern hostel that, in spite of a few minor flaws, is still an excellent option in a perfect location in the spiritual heart of Bogotá. Surprisingly, the prices of the hostels in this area differ quite substantially, and if you are traveling on a strict budget, this hostel should be at the forefront of your mind.

Broken windows onto major traffic
I got a room facing the all night party road outside the hostel. The windows in this room were wrapped wood and left plenty cracks. Neither I nor the guy bunk down could sleep. I could have gone someplace else, I could have slept in the hammocks but the hostel could have fixed the windows.
