The Hostelz.com Review
Bavaria YH hostels aim at hosting families and school groups, and so Jugendherberge Erlangen only has individual rooms and family rooms. You will not be able to find bunk bed rooms here, but there are usually plenty of free rooms, even though prices are a little above customary hostel prices.
This is an original hostel because it was established in a big community center where a school, some town administration departments, the Social Service, and some NGOs (like Amnesty International) are also located. It also holds apartments for German universities foreign students.
You will find here exceptionally clean and comfortable rooms, including linen and towels. And since Erlangen is a small quiet town, you can be sure to have relaxing nights in this hostel (there is a silent time to be respected), followed by a great breakfast! A huge help-yourself breakfast is available, where you can find fruit juice, several kinds of bread, and ham. There is also abundant coffee, tea, and chocolate as well as fruit salad and yogurt and people don't really care if you discreetly take some with you. However, you are not allowed to cook in the hostel kitchen.
Both reception and breakfast-serving personnel are very friendly and helpful and speak English (not many people in German hostels speak fluent English).
Erlangen is a convenient fifteen-minute train trip from crowded Nurnberg, where hostels are usually full, and is a relaxing spot for a tiring sightseeing day (showers in this hostel are great!). Also you can easily walk to the hostel from the train station since the location is about ten blocks from it, or take a bus out of Erlangen's main square. The hostel door closes at night, but you are given keys to get in anytime.
