The Hostelz.com Review
Aviemore Bunkhouse in the Cairngorms is a good place to stay if you want to explore the area and not spend too much.
The Location
Aviemore Bunkhouse is located next to the Old Bridge Inn on the road parallel to the centre of Aviemore. It is walking distance to the train station. This place is good for families, groups, and individuals be they walkers, cyclists, or people in transit to other areas of Scotland.
Aviemore Bunkhouse does not require membership or enforce a curfew, which is one of the great things about it being independent. However one of the major downfalls is they aren't very good at answering the phone or responding to phone messages or emails -- and don't seem too bothered about this either. Be persistent or simply turn up and hope for the best. They are sometimes booked out with school groups or motorbike touring weekends.
Rooms and Bathrooms
They accommodate up to forty-four people in ensuite (six to eight people) or family rooms (double bed and bunk), there are some private rooms as well. The rooms and ensuite bathrooms are clean and tidy. Linen and towels are free.
Common Spaces
There's not a lot of communal atmosphere as there's simply nowhere to hang out beyond the tiny kitchen (it's fully equipped, although many people seem to eat at the Old Bridge Inn next door). The setup of the place also means stairs and corridors, so you don't meet a lot of people unless they're in the kitchen. They offer free Wi-Fi, a drying room, laundry, storage locker, and cycle storage. They win some green kudos for their energy efficient methods, like thermal insulation, multi-glaze windows, and under-floor heating. There is parking but it's just across the road and down a bit, which is fine if you don't have heaps to carry.
Summary
While cheaper than some of the other options, you might just have to decide if the staff indifference, potentially problematic booking system, and lack of atmosphere are worth it. Still, it's a good option if you're in this part of the world.

Hostel only just opened, but is the best I have seen.
Small rooms, very snug and more like a hotel with shared rooms than a bunkhouse. Brilliant location!!! — Nigel (2003-02-01)
