The Hostelz.com Review
Brisbane City Backpackers is cheap and cheerful and it costs less than other hostels nearby, but this place is not for everyone. It's perfect as a base for staying long-term in the city.

The hostel is on Roma Street, the same address as the Transit Station where you'll arrive if coming by coach or train. The hostel will come and pick you up too, which is lovely, as although it's nearby, the hostel is uphill from the Transit Station. A walk into the CBD will take about fifteen to twenty minutes and so is the closest supermarket, although there is a garage nearby for cigs and soda.

There is a lot of choice when it comes to rooms, from twins and doubles to dorms of all descriptions. Bathrooms are often down the hall rather than en-suite, and sometimes on a different floor. One of the three blocks has only four toilets for over a hundred beds, but for some reason you never have to wait. There are also only about five showers for the same block, but they are lovely with good water pressure. There are hooks (and a dish) directly under the shower, but no hooks for your towel/clothes. There are only three sinks in the whole block.

Bedroom doors are self-locking, but the doors do not automatically shut and so in the larger dorms the room is often left open. Some people will even complain if you shut the door. There are no in-room lockers and cleaners will move your stuff. The largest dorm has over thirty-two beds.

There is a large common room with leather couches and a large TV with an area containing five PCs with free internet access (basically unlimited). Next to this is a terrace with picnic benches overlooking the city and it also has a swimming pool (which was drained for the full week we were there). Underneath this terrace is the hostel's bar, The Fiddlers Elbow, which also has a BBQ area and nightly promotions. The book exchange is basically a shelf and often contains only foreign titles, and as a consequence, a book left in the common room unattended will be taken.

The kitchen is huge but still isn't big enough for the number of people staying at the hostel. There is no space in the fridges and things are often stolen, moved, or "borrowed." Cutlery and crockery have a deposit but pans don't and so are often filthy. There are a limited number of lockers for food that can be rented.

The hostel can be very cliquey as there are a number of long-termers that keep their own company. And some people can be very anti-social, coming and going loudly at 4 a.m. -- if they are not working (public holiday) then no one else is entitled to sleep. In the larger dorm they will prefer to socialise inside the dorm rather than the common room and are very noisy. And although the hostel is smoke- and alcohol-free, people simply stand outside the fire escapes in order to circumvent the rules (often smoking illicit drugs). There is a job club on-site that will help you find work and there are often positions available in the hostel.

The Brisbane City Backpackers Hostel is a great place to stay if you are looking for somewhere close to the centre that's cheap and reputable. Unfortunately it suffers because of the large number of anti-social long-termers.

Fab!
This is a small hostel with a big hearth. the staff are always willing to help and everyone i knew who stayed there said the same. the bar is amazing -- well run, a good selection of events, and fun staff -- all you need! The other thing great about city is the security. the night manager is there all night and anyone who is acting inappropriately is dealt with and so you never feel uncomfortable or unsafe!

Unfriendly, rude staff
Where to start -- rude, unfriendly, highly incompetent staff is a good place. If you fancy your booking to be taken wrong and then being blamed yourself for them taking it wrong then Brisbane City backpackers is the place for you. They're not too bothered if you stay or go -- that is if you can interrupt them having a beer to actually check in. If you do eventually have the pleasure in staying then get ready to be woken up from 8 in the morning and then every minute after that with all the staff "Room Checking" and banging on the door so stay if you don't fancy a lie in or left in peace. Also everyone is the manager there so if you do have any problems just grab anybody you can because when you ask to speak to the manager you always are. So let's just check this, rude staff, wrong bookings, early rises -- I have to be missing more. Oh yes -- free Internet, well, that's great, you would think -- that's if you can get on. everyone hogs the net so in turn you are forced to walk to the next hostel to use it, you might as well stay there. Nearly forgot to mention when we arrived and once again they booked it wrong and were unwilling to help this is the response we got off the so called manager "We don't need your money. I would rather have empty beds. this is a backpackers -- you are just backpackers. this isn't a hotel. you get what you're given." I wouldn't mind but we booked about three weeks in advance and by credit card for the family room and they wanted to shove us in a dorm cause they messed up and shockingly blamed us. I can't describe what a bunch of asses work there. it's comical. Also if you're not from England, then you won't be helped.

I have stayed there for three days in six-share room. The share bathrooms and toilets are clean, even though in the morning you will see someone's underpants on the floor and shirt hanging on the bathroom door. The free wireless internet is quite slow, some time there is no signal. My bed is very old and you will be woke up anytime when someone go to upper bed because the bed will shake anytime there is someone. It is very bad for me that I had two roommates who usually went to pub and got drunk and make noise anytime when they came back with his partner and tried to stay in the same bed that design for only one person. The thing that I think it very very bad is they allow people to bring their own stereo and big speakers to the room, you didn't have to bring your alarm clock because your roommate would turn big speakers to wake you up. I didn't know how they can be still alive with a short sleeping. The outside but very close my room there was some group of people usually made noise after midnight until about 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. I could sleep fully and I found I don't have any power to get up or do anything in the morning. In common room there is a small TV and a lot of people that are much more than the chairs -- you have to stand to eat or tried to sit or find a new place that is far from the kitchen. You could bring your own laptop to use in there but there was just two power points in the common room -- a room that you could use wireless internet. In my room there is only one power point so say goodbye to your mobile, laptop, and iPod.

this hostel utilises the holistic approach to budget living in that it encompasses all an indivdual could need with a pechant for fun and entertainment. if you want to have fun, you essentially just walk straight out of your room and fall into it. if you want to be left alone you can be -- it sounds like a paradox scenario but it's true. all the staff were genuinely friendly and fun, for they themselves are backpackers -- so can empathise with any scenario you find yourself in. the best hostel i've stayed in, bar none.

i stayed here for a week. I hated it. the room stank, the place was really unfriendly. When you cooked dinner there was pretty much nowhere to go and sit to eat or have a chat. everybody just gets squashed into one little room, where the internet, TV, and dining space is. it was just a sick joke!

Probably Australia's best hostel. The staff is great and very organised and helpful. Free job club and the opportunity to work here has helped a lot of backpackers to find a job, myself included. Every room, bathrooms, and common areas are cleaned daily; bathrooms three times a day and the kitchen twice! I've never even had bedbugs here during my two-month stay even though this is a fairly big hostel. The bar is great, lively, and fun! Especially on Wednesdays, which is karaoke and fancy dress night. They have nightly entertainment and competitions where you can win some cash.

I had an amazing time here. Dont believe what you read. I booked in for one night and stayed for two months. The staff were such good fun and the place was cleaned every day, yes they came into your room but it wasnt early and i'd rather they woke you up than left the place a mess. You pay for a hostel, dont expect the ritz. You are backpackers!

The worst hostel I ever stayed in, moved to the hostel next door after the first night. Horrible staff and people. The room was a disgrace, i doubt it complies with health and safety standards. unclean, too over crowded. Do not stay here.

Had a horrible stay here. My partner and I paid sixty dollars a night for a double room i.e. some privacy -- instead we had staff barging into our room two or three times every morning while we were still in bed! They were in to empty the bin, then to vaccuum, and then to inspect for any alcohol or extra guests! The staff were so unfriendly and unhelpful -- had their own wee gang and if you weren't part of that then don't speak to them! The kitchen was over crowded and when you did manage to get something cooked there are two tables with two chairs at each to eat at! Please don't encourage backpacker exploitation by staying here!

Pretty good. Has a nice bar and outside balcony, with great view of Brisbane. I found it reasonably well looked after, toilets etc fairly clean. I stayed in a 4-bed, which was okay. They do have some very large dorms that I'm not sure of. Free Internet.

Worst place I've ever been to. After having spent six months in Australia, living on different hostels, me and my friends decided to stay at City Backpackers. And we did not experience anything positive about the place. It was dirty, disgusting, really bad security (we had people running in our room that did not belong there several times), very unfriendly personnel that cared more about money than anything else, without realising that without any guests -- no money. I would never go back to that place even if I got payed. They even tricked us for money -- twice. For example, they double-booked us so we had to sleep two in one bed and we didn't even get a refund. Every other hostel would have given us the next night for free and definitely appologize. Instead they denied us to stay another night since we been complaining. We felt badly treated and went to the police who said that they've had a lot of problems with this hostel before but they couldnt do anything about it. So stay out of this place and pick a more friendly hostel.

A great hostel BUT they NEVER clean it. Every room is overcrowded. If you book into a room that is infested with "bugs" (which is most) you won't enjoy it. On the other hand if you get lucky you'll like it ok.

Fantastic stay!!! Thank you for the best time ever — the staff are so helpful. They found me a job in minutes. The rooms and bathrooms are clean, and the bar!!! It's the best bar I have been to, and not as seedy as a more popular one down the road. Thank you City Backpackers for a memorable stay!

Do not stay at this hostel. The facilities are shoddy, the place is filthy and it is run by the most obnoxious set of staff I have ever met. Food is regularly stolen from the kitchen, the showers are "cleaned" twice a day but not to remove the dirt or the used condoms. Staff will walk into your room without knocking first and our roommate came home to find a staff member going through her bag apparently in search of "alcohol"....she is a Muslim!! The bar can be ok, but is generally populated by the worst kind of backpacker. Very cliquey with long term residents seemingly deluded that they are in the "in crowd" and will not speak to you. Racist and homophobic comments from the girls behind reception and we had bed bugs. Twice. Avoid at all costs, sensible people!!!

We were incredibly disappointed with this hostel. We made a booking for a large number of people (8) for a two-night stay, confirmed the booking three days before arriving, and gave a credit card number to hold the room. (After being informed that if we failed to show up, the first night's accommodation would be charged to the card.) And we gave them two mobile phone contact numbers for our group. Then we arrived at the hostel just after 5 p.m. to be told, incredibly rudely, that we were "late" (no arrival time had been specified when speaking to the hostel on two occasions) and that our beds had all been given away! This was at the time that it was flooding at the Gold Coast, there was an international rugby match, an AFL match and a rugby league match in Brisbane, so beds were impossible to find. There was no hint of an apology, and this hostel was so very unfriendly and rude, and didn't offer any kind of help. We later found out (from a very nice hostel down the road) that they are often called "City Backstabbers" as this giving away of booked beds is common practice for them. Stay away from this place, and look at some of the much better accommodation options in Brisbane.
