New Excelsior Hotel is located conveniently in Christchurch. The staff at the reception are friendly. The rooms are clean but quite smelly. The common areas are clean and spacious for accommodating travelers. It is a decent hostel for its price but we wouldn't recommend this hostel if you want a hostel with a good bed and quiet place. This place is good for short term stays.
The Location
Although it is at a convenient place in Christchurch, it can be a little difficult to find at first as the entrance is rather small and the sign does not stand out as much. You can locate the funky bar next to it more easily -- the hostel rooms are actually located on top of the bar -- so all you need to do is ask around and there are friendly tourists who will point you to the reception of the hostel. We were surprised as we could not hear the noise from the bar ground level. It is located just within a few minutes to the bus exchange terminal where you can catch the bus to anywhere within Christchurch or to and from Christchurch airport -- an added bonus. There are plenty of car parking spots but are metered, so have your coins handy.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are clean but smelly. Heaters are available in each room, which are great. The mattress is ok. The door locks are easy to use and the keys to the hostel and room are colour-coded. There is a female and male separate bathrooms on each level. The bathrooms are clean and have a small area where you can hang your towel or a seat to put your clean clothes inside each bathroom while showering.
Common Spaces
The common areas are excellent and really help people to meet and get chatting. The kitchen is big and clean -- there are some utensils but not enough for everyone to use at most times. The TV room is big, with a big TV, and has lots of books and games and a friendly atmosphere. There is a balcony on the top level, which can be noisy for those sleeping on the top floor. There are two internet computers located in the hallway.

Overall, this is not a bad hostel for its price and location. The rooms and common spaces are clean, but the bedrooms can be rather smelly.

Amazing! Excelsior has an intimate, cozy, homey atmosphere -- it was absolutely amazing there. The facilities provide everything you need in terms of practical matters and the staff spent over an hour helping us sort out our road trip. They really think like a customer and are so cool! We had a blast, and the sundeck is such a cool touch.
