The Hostelz.com Review
Conor's Topfloor Hostel is a cheap and friendly hostel in the centre of Auckland. It boasts an outdoor balcony with a free BBQ every Saturday evening (gold coin donation).
The Location
Conor's is in a handy location at the corner of Wellesley and Albert Street next to the City Central Hotel. The Air Bus from Auckland International Airport stops on Queen Street just around the corner. From street-level you need to take the old-style lift to reach the hostel entrance on the top floor. Just a few minutes' walk from the hostel is the main shopping area on Queen Street, and the Southern Hemisphere's tallest building, the Skytower, is also nearby. A fifteen-minute stroll down Queen Street brings you to the harbor, where you can catch a ferry to an uninhabited volcanic island -- a day-trip that is highly recommended.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel provides accommodation for ninety people with both dorms and a range of private rooms available. The budget eight- to nine-bed dorms have little space around the bunk beds and tend to get messy, but they are probably the cheapest places to stay in Auckland. Large lockers are provided in the dorms. The bathrooms are in a good clean condition with an adequate number of showers, toilets, and basins.
Common Spaces
The main common space in the hostel is a large open-plan kitchen/dining area that has all the usual facilities and is kept fairly clean. The adjacent rooftop balcony is a pleasant place to chill out and eat meals when the weather is nice. There is also a rather small TV room with a few sofas. The internet facilities available are wireless access and a computer beside the reception, but it's cheaper to use one of the many excellent internet cafes in the city centre. Other facilities include a laundry room and a telephone with free local calls.
Summary
Conor's Topfloor Hostel is a cheap place to stay in central Auckland, close to all the main attractions. The building is a little rundown and the cheapest dorms are cramped, but on the plus side there is a large kitchen/dining area and rooftop balcony. The atmosphere in the hostel is lively, and the staff are eager to help you find your way around New Zealand's biggest city.

Worst i have seen. Its time for new management, the place is unclean they never clean your sheets. they give you unclean sheets. the kitchen is the worst i have seen, its full of bugs. the rooms are smelly, the showers are rotten, the rooms are tiny. if i was you avoid this hostel. — Anonymous , england (2010-04-20)
Trash It is disgusting. You have to clean the bench before you prepare your meals and you wonder what the cleaners are hired for. There are bedbugs. There is dust. The rooms are not vacuumed properly. The taps in the showers are all broken and the water kept switching to cold. The TV room stinks and there was no curtains to cover the window or even a remote to change the channel. The rooms are hollow and on top of that there are gaps up the top that make the noise even more unbearable. There are children running around yelling and inconsiderate guests that woke us up time and time again. It is unprofessional. The managers were buddy buddy with the guests. I was particularly appalled that they participated in other peoples dramas. — Talia , UK (2009-12-16)
Very dirty -- do not go here The place is totally disgusting, totally inconsiderate, smells awful, the kitchen is a stink, most shower taps are broken, beds are dirty, and it most definitely never gets cleaned. Even bringing us to our room, the manager said that he hopes that it may have been cleaned. Do not go here -- avoid at all costs — Snoo zy , New Zealand (2009-11-13)

Top Notch I cannot give this hostel enough praise. The staff are out of this world, genuine, helpful, and fully committed to offering the backpacker everything he/she could possibly need, from a comfortable clean room to lay your weary head to facilities to wash clothing, cook food, and watch a little TV. That's not to mention the Saturday night BBQ, simply great! The good things balance out the faults of the place. If I could give this hostel marks out of ten it would get twelve. Absolutely awesome place to stay. Highly recommended! — Darryn Hill , UK (2009-05-19)
Awful, needs a scrub, new walls, new furniture, new lay out Doesn't look like it ever gets cleaned, and is in shambles. I found most of the people in the hostel were there for long stays, possibly actually living there. The walls don't touch the ceilings, the doors aren't fitted well, the walls are various paint colours, the carpet is probably never vacuumed and has stains everywhere, the bedding is old and tattered, the kitchen and bathrooms most likely has a lot of bacteria. And children crying and running up and down the hall at all hours. This place is cheap, thats it. — Erin , Canada (2008-11-07)

Not clean and stuffy but warm atmosphere! At first as I walked in that hostel and looked at the rooms, the bathroom, the kitchen, and the balcony I thought -- What a sh*t! But this opinion changed very fast over the days. Maybe the comfort I have in good old Germany is so good that I am a little bit of spoiled. I lived three days in Conors Topfloor Hostel and enjoyed the warmth and "big family-like" atmosphere. It's quite multicultural there and if you're a world open, friendly person without the biggest demands, so visit this very cheap hostel for at least one night. After a few nights in there you won't miss it. — Mo (2008-10-31)
Perhaps it is better in the dorms but I was pretty dismayed to discover that the walls of my "private room" did not go to the ceiling (about a thirty-centimeter gap). The light and noise from one room is impossible to keep out of another. Also the "silence at 10 p.m." thing is a joke. Loud talking, people playing the guitar in the hallway, the piano in the common area, children screaming routinely went to midnight and later. Stiflingly hot. Still you get what you pay for. — wilsonian , New Zealand (2007-03-27)

Great location, close to everything you want in the city for the price you pay (Paid $21/per night for 4 nights). The rooms are dirty, the sheet and the cover are dirty some even with stinks on them. The kitchen is ok. The showers not that great, their shower Curtin so dirty, but then what do you expect for $21?
The staffs were very friendly and try to help you as much as they can.
The place just needs more cleanness and some air freshener everywhere.
I give it 3 out 10. — Vic (2005-12-12)

I thought this place was great. From the old school lift to the warm atmosphere, I was made very comfortable from the start. The place was very clean, no rats or urine-soaked carpets!! Though the TV reception is a bit crap!! It's the cheapest and nicest hostel I found in Auckland, and it's right in the middle of town. Because of its quaint size and the owner's professional attitude, security is barely an issue. I can't really fault it to be honest. It's worth a look at least. :-) — Steven Johnstone (2005-09-02)
Watch out for the rats. — Anonymous (2005-04-18)
This place is very crappy now. It was much better when the Canadian guy was running it. — Anonymous (2004-09-13)

I was there May 27-31, 2004. The plus about this hostel: excellent central location, just across the street from the cinema complex and two blocks from the Auckland Tower. There are many fast foods restaurants within walking distance. No question about the location. From all the hostels I searched, this is the least expensive. The main halls are clean and the kitchen is OK. However, the minus about this hostel: the floor carpet stinks and the urine odor is so intense that it is annoying. Apparently previous guests wouldn't bother walking all the way to the restrooms and the hostel owner does not keep the carpet clean and free from odors. At least in Room 7 (each room is sub-divided into three units), the common entrance to this room smells very bad. The carpet inside the sub-unit is dirty and smelly but not as much as the common room entrance. The restrooms are OK, but they look like they are half-way constructed. The ceiling looks unfinished. Not all sub-units have a window. It could be a little annoying to have the one unit without windows or ventilation. — Jose (2004-06-27)

Recent changes have made this backpackers an awesome place to stay in Auckland. The entrance is a little sketchy but once you find your way to the 5th floor via an old-fashioned elevator you will be pleasantly surprised by the clean very friendly atmosphere. — Anonymous (2003-10-15)
