Hostelz.com's Review
La Niña is a small but cosy hostel located in a residential area of Colombia's capital city.

The Location

Unlike the majority of hostels in Bogotá, La Niña is not located in the touristy Candelaria part of the city, but in a residential area some twenty minutes away by taxi. It is unclear why this area was selected for a location, as there is not much in the local vicinity to interest a traveler. The links with the Transmilenio bus system are poor and even when walking the twenty minutes to the closest station, you still need to change buses along the way to get to the historical district that house all the major sights. This is in contrast to the majority of hostels that have these sights less than ten minutes away by foot. A trip to the historic centre, including walking times and changing buses, takes about an hour and is an arduous process, given that the buses are always full.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are quite small, and although large lockers are available to free up space, when full the rooms can feel a little cramped. The upper bunk is quite low, so if you are in the bottom bunk, you cannot sit up straight in bed. In spite of this, the mattresses are pretty comfortable and you should get a decent night's sleep.

There are five bathrooms that all come with showers. The showers are of different quality but all have hot water. The best one is located on the ground floor -- it has excellent pressure.

Common Spaces

The main common space is the kitchen area where the free breakfast (coffee, ice tea, a choice of cereals, and fresh bread) is served on a daily basis. The other main common space is a small TV room that can fit three or four people. There are some comfy seats around, where you can watch the cable TV. There is a communal computer on the third floor with internet access.

Summary

Although La Niña is very clean and well organized, with comfortable beds and excellent lockers, its location is odd and means that you are away from the action. It could be argued that you are in the centre of the city, around twenty minutes by taxi from the historical district and equally twenty minutes from the Zona Rosa (nightlife area), but the lack of nearby public transportation makes this location a big problem and makes you feel that you are a long way from anything. In a huge city of nine million people, location is everything and this gives the hostel a major disadvantage over its competitors.
