The Hostelz.com Review
El Caracol Doradoo is a good, clean, friendly hostel with large rooms, a lovely garden, and a friendly cat and dog to make you feel at home. It is possibly the cheapest hostel in the village and certainly one of the best values for money. The staff (one person on duty during the day, and one person at night) are laid back, friendly, and helpful. The stay here is very pleasant and chilled, just like the Caribbean.
The Location
The hostel is situated two hundred metres from the beach on Calle 11, at the far end of the small village. The bus to Santa Marta stops just outside the hostel. All the village amenities are within a few minutes walking distance of the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It is a little hostel with only three dorm rooms -- two four-bed dorms and one six-bed dorm. The rooms are large and spacious with a ceiling fan and table fan, though they do get a bit hot in the rainy season. They are equipped with a clothes rail and large mirror, two power-points, and a few tables. They are basic but spacious and clean.
Common Spaces
The dorm rooms face onto a pleasant, plant-filled little garden with a thatched TV area, a kitchen with a fridge freezer, work surfaces, and a two-ring gas stove. There is also a barbecue and hammocks from which to watch the TV or snooze under the hot afternoon sun. The far end of the garden houses the small but adequate shower room and toilet -- it's basic but clean. There is a shelf in the shower room for shampoos, but no hooks.
Summary
Overall, we find this hostel very pleasant. The staff are helpful, good-natured, and pay good attention to the cleanliness and upkeep of the hostel and garden. It is a tranquil, friendly, and laid-back little hostel with a homey feel and great value for money.
