We walked extensively to try to find a cheap place to stay and Yaluka was far cheaper than the others.
The Location
Taganga is a village of six thousand people in high season. The area near the sea can be noisy at night, but Yaluko is a couple of hundred meters back from the sea, so it is peaceful at night. Everything is walkable in Taganga -- the hostel is close to grocery shops, bars, restaurants, dive schools, and of course the beach.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are small and quite dark -- the only dorm has five beds in it (two bunks and a single) with a fan; the double is also just a bed and fan. As with everywhere in the area, it's very hot without air conditioning. There is an area to the rear that allows people to camp for half the price of a dorm place. You can also sleep in a hammock (no mozzie nets) out back for marginally more than camping. This might be a good option to stay cool at night.
The toilets again are basic. There are two -- the one near the dorm is the better with flushing toilet and unheated shower (it's not necessary here). None of the rooms have mosquito nets.
Common Spaces
There are outdoor seating areas to the front and back. People were playing drums and guitars out back at the weekly social (you can put in some money and everyone cooks and gets together on a Tuesday). There is an indoor seating area with couches and the internet computer (for a cheap price per hour). Reception, with Spanish speaking workers, is also based here and there are lots of leaflets about nearby attractions and businesses. For those on a small budget, there is also a kitchen (there is a small daily charge for use)
Summary
Rooms are little more than a bed and fan, but if it's a low price you want then you'll be hard pushed to find lower. The friendly atmosphere makes up for the rundown feel of the interior. Really hard-up travelers will love the savings offered by the hammock, camping, and kitchen options.
