The Hostelz.com Review
Hotel Familiar is a cheap hostel with basic rooms set in an old colonial building in the centre of the Getsemani district of Cartagena.
The Location
This hostel is situated in the backpacker-friendly Getsemani area, which is part of the old town, less affluent than the inner-walled districts of El Centro and San Diego, but the most popular area for backpacking travelers. The area is steeped in history, with impressive colonial buildings, elaborate balconies, and leafy plazas, although Getsemani area is more faded and rundown than the neighbouring inner-walled areas. The hostel is close to numerous internet cafes, bars, and restaurants.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel building would once have been a very impressive colonial building but is now rather rundown -- however it still retains many of the original features such as elaborate cornices and tiled floors as well as leaking masonry ad crumbling walls. The rooms are set around an open courtyard. There are singles, doubles, and dorms with three or fiour beds. The once-huge upper rooms of the colonial building have been boxed off into rather small doubles, however they retain the original pillars and ceilings. The ones to the front have balconies that are bizarrely locked up.
The rooms are basic, containing only a bed, table, hanger, and a small security box that has to be opened by staff. The rooms are provided with a sheet, towel, toilet paper, and soap. The bedding and toweling is crisp, clean, white, and well laundered. The rooms are clean, although in need of a lick of paint. Our room was leaking both from the ceiling and when it rained through the open balcony that has no door -- we complained and were moved quickly, albeit to a poorer room.
Common Spaces
Security is good -- the door is locked at the front with a padlock and the balconies are also locked. At night, the toilets are locked with a padlock, which opens with the room key. There is a small safe for each person. The reception area at the front has sofas and a TV and there is a small kitchen for use. There’s a few tables and chairs scattered around the hall.
Summary
This is a basic hostel that used to be the cheapest in town, but now we find that better-value hostels are available if you shop around. Security is good, though, and as it is quite busy the hostel is a good place for meeting people.
