The Hostelz.com Review
Otavalo Huasi is the cheapest hostel we could find in Quito's New Town. It's good value for money, given the savings made.

The Location

Situated right in the “Mariscal” area of Quito's New Town, it's a convenient location in a few minutes' walk of all the usual tourist facilities. Mariscal has myriad tour operators, restaurants, (many with free Wi-Fi), bookshops, and shops catering to the tourist market and it's where the majority of travelers make their base. Quito has an excellent network of trolley buses that can take you to the more scenic old town in around fifteen minutes. Juan Leno Vera is a busy thoroughfare and the rooms at the front of the building can be noisy, especially Thursday to Saturday due to the bars and clubs, but those at the back are fine.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The building is spread over two floors and the hostel is one floor above ground level and is a veritable labyrinth of corridors and stairs leading to the many dorms and rooms here. The rooms come in many different varieties -- six- and eight-bed dorms with bunk beds as well as single, twin, double (known as matrimonial), and triple rooms (one bunk and another bed). Some have TV but most don't. The rooms are somewhat spartan, but the beds are clean and many rooms have a storage facilities but are not lockable. There is Wi-Fi throughout the building -- for a small surcharge they will give you the password.

There are no ensuite rooms but the shared bathrooms are adequate and clean but are dated and in need of an upgrade. Soap and toilet paper are not supplied. The showers are hot and cold to varying degrees and there are towel rails and hangers in most. Towels are available free of charge from reception.

Common Spaces

There is a main area on the first floor at the front of the building overlooking the main road. It's mainly an eating area to consume the free breakfast (bread, jam, tea, coffee, scrambled eggs, and juice) but its also got a TV/DVD and around sixty titles to chose from plus cable TV (mainly Spanish but a few English channels). There is also a modern internet computer for use that charges by the hour. It's a bright and sociable spot and usually has a few other travelers around. There's also some information on the walls about tours and leaflets with local information.

Summary

Don't expect anything flash from the rooms but the great free breakfast, the location, and the price add up to a real bargain unless you are willing to pay a lot more. The Spanish-speaking staff are very helpful and friendly and it's a secure spot to spend your time in Quito.
