Hostelz.com's Review
Casa de Huespedes La Vicuña is a family-run hostel near the city center in Potosi. Breakfast is provided; however, it is only served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. with no exceptions. Decent, though sometimes slow Wi-Fi (typical in Bolivia) is available throughout the hostel, including the dorm rooms. The hostel is very secure, as the front door remains padlocked twenty-four hours a day and guests may only enter or exit by being let in or out by the hostel staff.

The Location

The hostel is several blocks from the city center. It is located within a lovely old building around a courtyard. You can take a taxi, but watch out for unscrupulous taxi drivers that may try to charge more. All of the main sights of Potosi are walking distance from the hostel. Maps of the city are available at reception.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Four-, six-, and eight-bed dorm rooms, as well as private rooms, are available. The rooms are clean and spacious and the beds and bedding are comfortable. There are plenty of blankets on the beds for the chillier nights. There are no lockers in the dorm rooms, though the rooms are lockable with a padlock that the hostel provides. There is one main bathroom with several individual toilet and shower stalls. There is plenty of hot water and good pressure in the showers. There are hooks for clothes and towels in the shower stalls, but no place to put toiletries other than the floor. The bathrooms are cleaned regularly.

Common Spaces

This hostel is not social hostel with a typical hostel environment. The second floor of the two-story hostel has a lounge area with a TV, but the hostel overall has more of a hotel feel to it. There are no computers available for guest use and no outdoor sitting area (despite the large courtyard around which the hostel is built). There is no kitchen for guest use. The hostel does have secure luggage storage.

Summary

Overall, Casa de Huespedes La Vicuña is a good place to stay in Potosi. It is cheap, clean, well located, and has hot water and Wi-Fi -- everything a traveler would need, just in a toned-down, sterile-type environment. The hostel owners are lovely and available to assist with any guest needs. Guests can purchase bus tickets or have private taxis arranged to neighboring towns, including Sucre.
