Hostelz.com's Review
HI - Houston - Morty Rich Hostel is a beautifully converted, old-style Houston home, completed in late 2011. There is free breakfast every morning of cereal and biscuits with tea and coffee. There is also a once-a-week dinner available for a small fee. There is also free luggage storage all day.

The Location

The hostel is located about fifteen minutes from downtown Houston by bus, which is where all of the museums, theatres, and shopping are. There are many grocery shops and restaurants just a few blocks from the hostel. The hostel is about twenty minutes from the airport, ten minutes from the Amtrak, and five minutes from the Greyhound Station. It's very easy to find; though as it's new, most cab drivers do not know where it is -- make sure you have the address with you. The neighbourhood where the hostel is located is very safe, complete with tree-lined streets. The neighbourhood is also very quiet, so you should have no problems getting a full night's sleep at this hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms range in size from privates to four-, six-, and eight-bed dorms; coed and gender-separated dorms are available. Each dorm has an adjoining bathroom with toilet, and there is another bathroom/toilet on the ground floor. Though there is only one bathroom per dorm, there is plenty of room to change and put your things. The hostel is very clean, as the bathrooms and rooms are cleaned daily. There are no in room lockers currently, some are available on the ground floor. Also, the beds are very comfortable and come with sheets and duvets, not a tattered blanket.

Common Spaces

There is plenty of shared space at the hostel, as the whole ground floor is a common area. There is a kitchen, dinning room, library with games and books, lounge room, patio and swimming pool (which in the Texan summer would definitely be a popular place). The kitchen is equipped with everything you would need (plenty of utensils, pots and pans, an oven, microwave) to cook up a storm. The vibe of the hostel is very friendly and social with a wide range of travelers. We were there during the winter months, so there wasn't much of a social/party aspect, but in the summer months with the outdoor areas maybe this is different.

Summary

The hostel has plenty of information about things to going on and to do in Houston. The staff are also very friendly/helpful and nothing is too much trouble. This hostel is truly one of the better ones and if you’re going through Houston we would definitely recommend checking it out.
