The Hostelz.com Review
Voss Vandrerhjem is located right on the lake, about seven hundred meters from the train station. It's a nice building with a friendly atmosphere. There are lots of communal spaces to sit (the deck by the lake, the dining room, the lobby) and free internet and cable tv. It is also possible to rent bikes, canoes, and kayaks for a reasonable price.

Different dorm rooms are available for different budgets The cheapest dorm is in the attic -- a large room with mattresses on the floor. It could potentially sleep a lot of guests, but when we stayed, it was fairly quiet. There is no glass in some of the windows so it can get quite cool, and the cleaning does not occur very regularly. There are plenty of mattresses and stacking two is actually quite comfortable. For this option, the toilets and showers are in the basement, with the saunas. The showers have no privacy and the toilet door has no lock. When we stayed, the male sauna was out of order, so the female sauna became a shared facility. This meant that men could easily walk in on you whilst taking a shower as there is no door or curtain. Six-bed dorm rooms are also available, but are separated into male and female dorms. These dorms have toilets and showers in the room, but cost a fair bit more. If you are concerned about privacy, this is definitely the best option.

Breakfast is included in the price and uses organic fruit and vegetables from across the road. The kitchen has very basic facilities, but is lacking a lot of items. It is also very small so it's hard for a few people to cook at the same time. The guest kitchen is also closed between ten and two. It is possible to buy dinner at the restaurant in the hostel.

5 Great choice
I chose this hostel pretty randomly, but I was pleasantly surprised. The location is beautiful with a great view of the glaciers and is a great place to go kayaking (they rent, but there are many nearby tour operators) or hiking. I stayed in a girls room, which was clean and had a private bathroom. The lounge has a coffee shop and nice chairs. On Thursday and Friday nights they have a reasonably priced restaurant, which serves delicious traditional Norwegian food from potato dumplings to salmon. Of course, the best part is the organic breakfast, which is another great opportunity to taste traditional cuisine as they serve things like liver paste and pungent gamalost (a type of cheese). For the less adventurous they have fresh baked bread, delicious cheese, and homemade jam. As a foodie, this hostel was a great way to delve into tradition -- a great surprise!

5 I came here with a University Music Tour in 2005, and loved every moment of it. Truly fantastic people, both in the town and running the hostel, made the stay loads of fun and the booking very easy. The food was above average of what you would expect in a hostel (though I can't get used to Northern European breakfasts) and the facilities for cooking and washing were, as mentioned above, more than adequate. The weather wasn't fantastic whilst we were there, but we still found time to go up to the mountains (an easy trip) and for the rest of it we managed to keep ourselves amused in the Hostel itself, which is roomy and clean, basically, all we were looking for. A great place to stay if you happen to find yourself in Voss!

5 This place is fabulous! It looks out right onto the lake, and they rent kayaks, etc. I had a room to myself because it wasn't crowded. The bathroom was in the room and it was clean. The breakfast was really great for a free breakfast. The kitchen was adequate (which is important in Norway because food is so expensive!) They have laundry facilities, but it is expensive (welcome to Norway!) A great place to meet people.
