Hostelz.com's Review
Voss Vandrerhjem is located right on the lake, about seven hundred meters from the train station. It's a nice building with a friendly atmosphere. There are lots of communal spaces to sit (the deck by the lake, the dining room, the lobby) and free internet and cable tv. It is also possible to rent bikes, canoes, and kayaks for a reasonable price.

Different dorm rooms are available for different budgets The cheapest dorm is in the attic -- a large room with mattresses on the floor. It could potentially sleep a lot of guests, but when we stayed, it was fairly quiet. There is no glass in some of the windows so it can get quite cool, and the cleaning does not occur very regularly. There are plenty of mattresses and stacking two is actually quite comfortable. For this option, the toilets and showers are in the basement, with the saunas. The showers have no privacy and the toilet door has no lock. When we stayed, the male sauna was out of order, so the female sauna became a shared facility. This meant that men could easily walk in on you whilst taking a shower as there is no door or curtain. Six-bed dorm rooms are also available, but are separated into male and female dorms. These dorms have toilets and showers in the room, but cost a fair bit more. If you are concerned about privacy, this is definitely the best option.

Breakfast is included in the price and uses organic fruit and vegetables from across the road. The kitchen has very basic facilities, but is lacking a lot of items. It is also very small so it's hard for a few people to cook at the same time. The guest kitchen is also closed between ten and two. It is possible to buy dinner at the restaurant in the hostel.

5   Good view aside the beach, super breakfast, nice staff it's not far from train station, just located aside the beach, good view to enjoy and relax, the breakfast is really 5 star standard, a lots kinds fruits, yogurt, cheese, juice -- the best one during my two weeks holiday, and free clean sheets. a good experience in voss.  ()
5   School trip I came here as a school trip in February 2010 for a skiing. I loved every minute of it as the food was great, organic and tasty. It provided many things as both sides of the dorms were great view. Norway is expensive but i would recommend coming here as it is a GREAT HOLIDAY!!!!!!  , England ()
5   Great choice I chose this hostel pretty randomly, but I was pleasantly surprised. The location is beautiful with a great view of the glaciers and is a great place to go kayaking (they rent, but there are many nearby tour operators) or hiking. I stayed in a girls room, which was clean and had a private bathroom. The lounge has a coffee shop and nice chairs. On Thursday and Friday nights they have a reasonably priced restaurant, which serves delicious traditional Norwegian food from potato dumplings to salmon. Of course, the best part is the organic breakfast, which is another great opportunity to taste traditional cuisine as they serve things like liver paste and pungent gamalost (a type of cheese). For the less adventurous they have fresh baked bread, delicious cheese, and homemade jam. As a foodie, this hostel was a great way to delve into tradition -- a great surprise!  , United States ()
2   Poor value for money I stayed here for one night in May 2008. I know Norway is an expensive country, but this really was the worst value hostel I have ever stayed in. The cost for a private twin room for 2 people was approx 370 Kroner each (about £37 / $74). On top of this you each had to pay 450K EACH(£4.50) to hire bed linen, PLUS another 20K (£2) if you wanted a towel. This takes the total cost for two people, including bed linen and towel hire, to 870K (£87 / $174) for ONE night!! For this you get a spartan, shabby, slightly dirty room, with rickety beds. That's it. On the positive side, the view from the window was nice (not that we wanted to spend any time at all in the room), the hostel has a nice outside veranda overlooking the lake, and provides a good, organic breakfast. You can also hire canoes from reception and paddle on the lake, which is good fun. This may be one of your cheaper options for staying in Voss, but I would recommend having a scout around for alternatives before booking here -- I saw a couple of pensionjats which would've been better value at approx 600K for a double room (which would have included sheets and towels, and a nicer room) but couldn't get through to them in time to book. Overall this hostel is vastly overpriced for what you get, even in Norway!  , UK ()
5  I came here with a University Music Tour in 2005, and loved every moment of it. Truly fantastic people, both in the town and running the hostel, made the stay loads of fun and the booking very easy. The food was above average of what you would expect in a hostel (though I can't get used to Northern European breakfasts) and the facilities for cooking and washing were, as mentioned above, more than adequate. The weather wasn't fantastic whilst we were there, but we still found time to go up to the mountains (an easy trip) and for the rest of it we managed to keep ourselves amused in the Hostel itself, which is roomy and clean, basically, all we were looking for. A great place to stay if you happen to find yourself in Voss!  ()
5  This place is fabulous! It looks out right onto the lake, and they rent kayaks, etc. I had a room to myself because it wasn't crowded. The bathroom was in the room and it was clean. The breakfast was really great for a free breakfast. The kitchen was adequate (which is important in Norway because food is so expensive!) They have laundry facilities, but it is expensive (welcome to Norway!) A great place to meet people.  ()
