This hostel was built to be a hostel and is open all year. There are pictures on the wall telling the history of the hostel and how it was built. A very cute log building adjoins a newer wing of the hostel and there is a lot of personality here. The staff are also very friendly, the reception sells ice cream and has bicycles available for rent (but only two bikes).
This hostel is within walking distance of the train station. There is a map outside the train station, but the hostel is also not far from the bus station (no map, you'll need to walk along Tuneveien for about a mile or so).
This hostel has plenty of information about nearby hostels in the area, and tourist info about the town and what to do when visiting. The weather in southern Norway, at the location of the Sarpsborg Vandrerhjem is really great, warm and sunny (rare for Norway). This hostel is near (but not walking distance) to Oldtidsveien (Rt 110), an old road along which there are many rock carvings, pictographs, and burial mounds. There is also a burial mound park in the center of town.
The common room has a TV, and there are some games worth playing, even if you don't know Norwegian. There are two common rooms. The one at the top of the house is quiet and generally unused. It is also smoke-free. The common room at the bottom of the hostel is smoky and busy. So you have a choice.
At least some of the rooms have a bathroom and shower in the room. The guest kitchen is also very nice and clean, with all the necessary cooking equipment (but is a little hard to find).
This is also one of the only hostels in Norway with lockers in the hallway (a key can be obtained at reception). Unfortunately, they are only big enough for valuables like a wallet or small bag. However, this hostel feels extremely safe. The hostel is expensive, but breakfast is included.
