The Hostelz.com Review
The Narvik Vandrerhjem - HI hostel is open in the summer time inside the Victoria Hotel in the centre of Narvik. It's easy to find. Go right out side the train station the head left up the little hill and around the Shell petrol station. Follow the road around to the left and you should be able to see the HI logo a couple of hundred meters ahead.
The dorm rooms are temporarily put into the conference room of the hotel. Despite this, they are nice spacious rooms with a balcony. There are not any locks on the rooms or lockers, but there is someone watching when people enter the building and it's a safe sleepy town.
There is free internet, laundry, cable TV, a modern and equipped kitchen, and new showers. The beds are new and comfy. Linen is not included, though you can use sleeping bags. The staff are helpful with local information. There is a café on site which sells breakfast, lunch and dinner.
This hostel is nice and clean. It's quite and relaxing and has good and (functional) facilities. It's in a great location in the middle of town and close to transport and supermarkets. It's quite relaxed for a HI hostel as there are not to many rules or a lock out. You can use the kitchen or shower whenever you want and reception is open 24 hours.

Initially, it was bad. I had reserved family quarters (daughter, thirteen; son, fifteen; and myself) a week before, from St. Petersburg Russia. The directions were easy enough from the train station, which had spent the day bringing us from Ulea, Sweden, 17JUL2004. We already had altitude, so it was a fairly level kilometer walk to the Victoria Hotel. The receptionist gave us a key and directions to the separate cabin, and wanted to call a cab for us. I foolishly declared that we could walk --it was all downhill! Unfortunately, we could not find the site, despite a good hours search. Exhausted, we returned to the Victoria Hotel, where we were once again offered a cab. This time I absolutely deferred, declaring that we needed to stay in the coed dorm. It was wonderful and well worth it. We caught the bus to Bodo the next morning (early), and they opened the cafe early for us to eat a delicious meal. During the overnight, I washed our clothes and was extremely successful with 50% of it. The washing part was 100% successful, but the spin/water removal part was 0% successful, thus we had damp, albeit clean, clothes to wear while traveling. The Victoria Hotel is a lovely place to stay, with excellent facilities (if you know how to use them!), and I highly recommend it. — Juanito Hayburg (2006-09-02)
