The Hostelz.com Review
The Black Cockatoo really is a unique place to stay. The accommodation is based just on the edge of the very small town of Nannup (a two-minute walk to city centre). Nannup itself has a few cafes, a telecentre for email/internet, two general stores, fish and chip shop, hotel with bar, tourist info, and a bottle shop. There are a few craft-type shops too. You can get to the accommodation by car -- a great stop if travelling Albany to Margaret River by transwa coach or the Backpacker oriented 'Easy Rider' jump on jump off bus service.
There are limited things to do in Nannup but those seeking peace and calm will be satisfied with the plentiful walking trails, canoeing, absence of TV, and numerous peaceful spots in the Black Cockatoo's garden -- bring a few good books!
The accommodation offers two dorm rooms with standard beds -- a nice change from bunk beds. There is the Angel room (a double bed in the cabin in the garden) and the Tiger room (double and single bed). All share one bathroom with tub and shower and two toilets. The hostel has very reasonable rates and you can even camp in their garden.
There are basic kitchen facilities with gas hob, fridge, toaster, and kettle -- there's no oven and no microwave. There are plenty of places to eat in Nannup, however. You can buy eggs from the chickens in the garden and the herb garden is free to use for guests. A washing machine is available. There's no tumble dryer but there are ample drying lines in the huge garden.
Their are no lockers or cupboards in the rooms, but there's no real need for security here as it's such a rural location and friendly place. In the huge garden there are so many spots for relaxing, including a hammock, a swing, a double swing seat, yoga decking, several picnic benches and tables, comfy seats, and plentiful grass. There is a good-sized lounge area with plentiful supply of reading material -- travel guides, New Age literature, and modern books -- as well as board games, Jenga, and cards provided. The owner, Gary, is extremely helpful and friendly and always happy to suggest local activities without being intrusive.
This hostel is kept clean and tidy, but as the accommodation is in a converted timber cottage, do not expect ultra-clean stainless steel. This place is a must if you're into things eco-friendly.

A great place to find some' me' time the first time i saw the black cockatoo i was traveling from perth to albany on the easy rider bus (another great thing to do whilst you are in WA) we stopped to pick up 3 girls that had been there for a few days, they could not stop saying how wonderful it was. unfortunately I had to be in albany (emmu point) to catch up with my friends on a set date so could not get of the hop on hop off bus. but vowed to go there some day, that was 5 years ago. then on my next visit to oz I decided to hire a car for a few days and this time I managed to get to stay,(only one night) i got to stay in the angle room, let me tell you it was wonderful, i sat on the porch, with my glass of local wine, and dreamed of living there (forever). the room has its own fridge and kettle. the main house has a proper kitchen and lounge, but i walked the few yards to the shops and found a really nice little place that cooked good food and sold local produce, and gifts. the couple that ran it were very friendly. slept very soundly to wake next morning to some of the local wild life climbing across the roof of the cabin. was a little worried if it would be an eco loo as its got a lot of eco/recycle/alternative/new ago/hippyorganic type bits but it was a flush style system (that was almost a disappointment) there are solar lights about the grounds (so no needs for torches) the decor is unique and amazing. if you are looking for posh don't stay here but if you are looking for what i call 'me' time or chill out time this is the place. and if its the same guy that runs the place as was there on my last visit he is great there to help but not in your face. next time i get to oz i plan to make time to stay for longer. i still have the car bumper sticker i was given when I left and any time i feel low i get that out of my oz box and remember that there is a little bit of heaven about (pity it's on the other side of the world) i could go on lots more but i think you get the idea. by the way just along the road towards demark/ albany (on a sharp bend) is a really nice wine place were you can sample and buy. — ellen , english (2011-06-06)

One of life's precious memories I came with a friend to the Black Cockatoo and spent two wonderful nights in 2009. The frogs kept us amused in the evenings and the friendliness of everyone there felt so welcoming. The murals and other art made me want to live differently when I came back to England. Nothing will be the same for me after staying here. This place is one of the few in the world where you know you have come home even though it is not where you normally live. The cabin is marvelous and calm. The spinning angels watch over all who sleep there. Go see! — Richard Fiddler , England (2011-03-23)

The Black Cockatoo was quite simply a little piece of heaven. It was the most peaceful, relaxing and fabulous place that I stayed in while travelling Australia. Everything at the Black Cockatoo from the hammock to the gardens to playing Jenga by the fire at night was truly an experience that I will never forget and one I hope to relive at some stage in the future. Truly is a place that needs to be experienced to be appreciated. — Eimear (2006-06-13)

This hostel is definetely one of the best I have visited during my travels through Australia! It is far away from all the usual backpacker madness, decorated and run by a very friendly owner who even drives you to places to see his wonderful area. The garden is just beautiful and you can hang out in the hammock all night long listening to the frogs -- I had a great time at the Black Cockatoo and would highly recommend it to everyone who is looking for more than just the usual anonymous party hostel! — Australia (2006-04-08)

I've stayed at the Black Cockatoo three times (once in 1999 and twice in 2004). It is simply wonderful. A million miles from the sterile mediocrity of the big hostel chains. — Simon Young (2005-02-11)

I stayed here with some friends. I was planning on staying two nights and stayed for a week! Such a great atmosphere, hammocks in the huge garden and a teepee to sleep in if you want. There are no bunk beds — luxury! Definitely stay here. — Karla (2005-02-06)

The Black Cockatoo is an experience in itself. It was great to chill out here for three days!! — Connie (2004-12-29)

The Black Cockatoo is something of an ashram. One feels one's mind beginning to relax the minute one walks through the door — no kidding, it is that kind of place. It oozes charm, and its gardens...! It's an ashram, an oasis, and a place of peace. I like to visit here whenever I am travelling through Nannup, and even when I am not in Nannup I always find some excuse to come here. — Tim McCabe (2004-11-01)

We stayed for 3 days and had a wonderful time. It was so peaceful, so relaxing. This place is just wonderful. If I ever return to Australia, this is the ONE place I'll make sure to visit. — Flemming Holm jensen (2004-08-05)

This was my second visit to the Black Cockatoo. Last summer my girlfriend and I stayed in the Angel room--a cabin off to the side of the main house. We both loved it. I've just spent a week in the caravan at the bottom of the garden, chilling out. It's quiet, civilized, clean, and a great place to pause for a while and recharge. The owner is helpful and discreet. The garden is a sight to behold, brimming with berries, nuts, and fruit, and it's a riot of flowers in the summer. There are wild birds galore. I had a bright blue splendid wren to keep me company at breakfast every morning. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Do yourself a favour, and come here. — Peter Demetrius (2004-06-29)
