The Hostelz.com Review
Unfortunately for anyone travelling the coast of Western Australia, this is currently the only backpackers in Carnarvon. Carnarvon often has fruit-picking, stationhand, and fishing trawler work available for backpackers, but it's almost worth giving the opportunities there a miss just to avoid this place. It really is perhaps the worst hostel in Australia.

Most of its problems stem from the owner and not the facilities themselves, although they are lacking as well. There aren't enough bathroom facilities, and they would often be completely out of toilet paper. The kitchen is small, the rooms plain and uninspiring, and the social lounge has a non-operational pool table and foosball table that takes money without refund even though they don't work. The lounge closes at ten o'clock promptly, leaving everyone with no option but to cluster around a few small picnic tables outside, because there's no drinking in the main building and strict rules about noise.

The owner is unfriendly, unhelpful, gloomy, and strict. He seems to have completely missed the idea of hostels as welcoming places for backpackers; in fact, he seems to hate backpackers. Everything costs money (deposits for cutlery, deposits for keys, no blankets provided without a deposit, and so on). There are absolutely no refunds whatsoever, no matter what. He's not helpful about looking for work, instead telling those who ask that there's nothing available; he yells at guests for tiny infringements (a misplaced step in a flowerbed with no actual flowers got a guest a tongue-lashing). Up and down the coast of WA the Carnarvon Backpackers has a bad reputation with travellers, and it's a well-deserved one. Don't be fooled by the semi-cheerful aspect of the building from the street; stay at the caravan park if you must stay in Carnarvon.

4 Good
The host changed, the owner runs it now. Of course there are strict rules, its a village full of fisherman. They get drunk, they take drugs, they they freak out. Only way to stay on top and not get fooled around by them is to have strict rules without any exception. the facilities are simple but much more cleaner than in some other hostels I stayed in! Cathy, the owner might seem strange if you dont know her or anything else about Carnarvon, but if you are nice and friendly, she ll tread you just the same. Be nice to her and you will find out that she is a very lovely and loving person. I came to Carnarvan, I met a very nice owner, host and friend who always did her best for the backpackers who sometimes really treated her like sh*t -- which makes me understand her yelling at them. I enjoyed my time there, Cathy was always nice and helpful, I always had well paid work where I got to with the shuttle she provides.

1 The worst place I have ever stayed in. I had just arrived in the country was tired and stressed and was forced to deal with abuse stress and straight out robbery. I was charged $5 late fee when she didn't open the office. Don't ever go there. It is a strange place and not worth your time.

Horrible, the owner is a complete bitch and the place is totally rundown and is dirty, and the owner is as unfriendly as you can get. Stay away.

1 The worst place i've stayed in my life. Never go there.
Well, let's start saying that the first thing that i saw here was that the owner (a very strange and rude woman) had all the bad reviews -- insulting her and saying that the place was horrible -- posted on the reception on her own hostel! that was very strange at the beginning, i had a very negative feeling about the place, and i was right. She always seemed to hate herself and every backpacker. The lounge room seemed like a jail and the place seemed like a jail as well. She seems to hate everybody, especially if you can't speak the best english or have a foreign accent. In the rooms you can see how everybody dislikes the place because it's written how bad it is or with messages to the owner. They charged me extra money two days in a row, and apart from that I wanted to keep my luggage there while i waited for the bus to get out of the city and they wanted to charge me another night! I'll simply end with this, for god sake don't go there!

1 i stayed there in 2004 and it wasn't too bad. the communal area was open pretty late and the pool table worked. there was plenty of work offered and a guy called gavin would take us out of carnarvon for a swim at one of the many beaches up the coast. but then a load of fishermen had a party one night and wrecked the joint. thats when chris stepped in and started with his psychotic behaviour. i really enjoyed winding him up, but eventually had to move out. me and my girlfriend moved to the caravan park where it was much nicer. the couple that run it are the opposite of chris. stay away from carnarvon backpackers!

1 Our van broke down just south of carnarven and at 11.00 at night had no choice but to come to the backpackers. After a good impression of Adolf we had to memorize the rules and regs and then got stuck in a room infested with cockroaches, sandflies and mosquitos. The bedroom, kitchen, social room, and even bathroom had a deathly smell of rotten fish? horrible place, neeedless to say we spent the next couple of nights on the beach and we got bitten a whole lot less. Avoid like the plague.

4 I found the manager friendly and helpful in finding work for me, even at this late stage of the season they still seem to have plenty of work in Carnarvon. The place was clean and tidy, with basic rooms, but all cooking facilities are in new kitchens (stainless steel!). A good budget backpackers.

1 The most horrible place I have ever stayed. It's run by a husband/wife team, the man is rarely around and the woman who attempts to run the place is constantly strung out on something the few times she is actually around. Our first night there the woman that runs the place threw some drunk in our room. When more things started happening we decided to leave and told them we would not be paying them for the last few nights because we were absolutely disgusted about everyone and everything at this hostel. I suppose we should have told them that after we got out bags because we went to find a new place to stay went back there to get our things and she had taken them. We had to call the cops on her! We ended up staying at the Port Hotel. I don't recommend that one either but even that was better than staying at the Carnarvon dumpbackers.

1 Me and my boyfriend went to Carnarvon looking for work. We ended up staying at the Carnarvon Backpackers on the waterfront. This used to be a YHA hostel, but when we got there we realized why it was no longer! The manager Chris was the most horrible man I have ever met and he was really creepy!!! Our hostel room was dirty. The reception was always closed. All in all, it was a really horrible place to stay and get work from. Don't go there!

3 We're a group of 5 travellers who stayed at Carnarvon Caravan & Tourist park. We hired a caravan for $79 per night (total) it worked out cheaper than the hostel. It had lovely facilities -- a barbeque and a swimming pool. It does have a small cooker. There were clean toilets and friendly service, but it's not for the party traveller!
