The Hostelz.com Review
Erskine River Backpackers is super charming and feels very inviting and cozy. The free-growing vines are a nice touch and the outdoor seating options are great for getting out of your room and being social.
The Location
The location is pretty good -- it's very close to the beach (just a few minutes' walk), and really close to shops (most are pretty expensive) and good eating options (these range in price). There is a bar-type establishment attached to this hostel and a tea room with breakfast and lunch options (these are operated independently of the hostel). There is also a grocery store with typical food and, of course, booze just a few hundred yards away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are nice enough -- a bit cramped, but clean, which is always appreciated. In the dorm-style room, which has two bunk beds and a double bed; there is no ensuite bathroom but there is a TV and mini-fridge, which makes up for that. The beds are pretty typical but not uncomfortable. Showers and toilets are located in a separate building unless your room has ensuite -- it can get a bit old having to walk outside your bedroom area to another building in the middle of the night.
Common Spaces
This is not necessarily a party hostel -- overall, it's pretty quiet. But the big, ten-bed dorm can get pretty wild and fun with the right mix of people. It's easy to meet people here, with plenty of seating at big tables on the porches and on the patio at the front.
Summary
Safety is not a concern, as the area of Lorne is very friendly and feels safe. However, it does seem that our door frames and windows could have been a bit sturdier -- would not have been hard for someone to break in. We definitely would recommend this to travelers who need somewhere to stay along the Great Ocean Road. The price is neither too high nor especially cheap and it's worth staying a night or so.
