Backpackers In Paradise

The Review

Backpackers In Paradise is a great place to stay in Surfers Paradise. At first impression, you may think this is a party hostel where you won't be able to sleep, but this idea doesn't match reality. This is a really fun hostel with good communal areas, a bar, and a convenience shop inside the hostel -- both close early. The hostel has always something planned for the guests to go out with cheap drinks (sometimes free drinks) and a lot of fun. This way, those who want to sleep at night can actually do it and those who want to get fun are outside the hostel enjoying Surfers Paradise nightlife.

The Location

The hostel is near the city center and ten minutes' walk to the beach. If you arrive by bus, the hostel is only three hundred fifty metres from the Greyhound stop -- even fewer if you arrive in TransLink. If you arrive by car, you'll easily get a spot for parking near the hostel. At night, if you go out for a drink in the city centre, on the way back you will cross one really quiet neighbourhood, with no one on the streets, but it is safe.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel has three really cheap and big dorms, a few smaller dorms, a lot of four-person dorms, private rooms, and apartments -- all of them ensuite. This means that in the big dorms, the bathroom can get a little bit busy sometimes. The hostel provides free linen and the beds are nice. The dorms have lockers and are wide, with plenty of space for everyone. The bathrooms are ok in terms of cleaning, although sometimes one bathroom is not enough for sixteen people or more (in the three big dorms). The shower is also ok -- you'll get good pressure on the tap, but there is a shortage of hooks/shelves for your clothes and your shampoo and soap will have to stay on the floor, once there is no place for you to put them.

Common Spaces

In this hostel, you have nice and good-looking common spaces. There is a big TV room with a lot of places for people to sit, and there are some tables and seating outside that are great at night for drinking a beer before going out or just to read a book. There is also the bar -- with cheap snacks and beer -- and the convenience store; both close early, before 10 p.m. There is a nice swimming pool that invites you to relax a bit or play volleyball; right next to it, there's a nice sundeck if you just want to lay there enjoying the sun. This hostel has also pool tables and table tennis tables. The kitchen is really small and in some hours gets too much crowded. In order for you to use a frying pan, you'll have to ask for one at the reception and leave your room key -- this saves some space in the kitchen, but also ensures that everybody does a good job when it comes to washing up.

In the end, the overall impression is that this is a very cheap place to stay in Surfers Paradise that provides all the essentials for you. Backpackers in Paradise is a hostel with a lot of different people hanging around, mixing those who want to party every night and enjoy the great nightlife in Surfers, those who want to relax and travel along the Gold Coast and those who are on a short break vacations that want both. In the end you have a happy and fun place, ensuring that every guest respects the rules that balance the atmosphere.

Alcohol forbidden
they took our goon!!!!!!!!
Cold and basic
Rude grumpy staff, very shaky bunks and freezing cold if the weather isn't perfect. While the location was great and it was nice having a bathroom (& big mirror) in the room I'd say this hostel was pretty basic. Bring your own sleeping bag if the weathers slightly cold. They only give out sheets despite the weather and don't even THINK about asking the staff for help. You'll interrupt their conversation!
One night in paradise
I only got to stay one night in surfers and loved it i had a flight to go to sydney so could not stay any longer. Backpackers in paradise was great, clean, friendly, and close to town and beach. i arrived expecting winter weather but it was 27 and sunny.
This hostel is in a good location, close to the beach, shops and all the bars and clubs. They have two happy hours at the bar every night so lots of cheap drinks. The rooms were clean and tidy. Good fun place to stay.
Great place
I have been visiting the Gold Coast for a long time for my holidays as i live in Sydney and every time i have stayed in self contained apartments in Surfers Paradise. this time around i decided to check out the hostel accommodation and i was pleasantly surprised. i stayed in a four bed dorm for 5 days at backpackers in paradise and had a great time. i was traveling alone this time around and meet loads of cool people, had two irish lads in the room who dragged me out to party every night (good times). The hostel has a great bar, ask Markus the bar man for a few magic tricks. Hostel also has a cool movie room with a big screen and loads of films to choose from. Im glad i gave the hostel thing a try and would recommend backpackers in paradise to anyone.
Me and the lads have been traveling around oz for 2 months and spent 4 days in surfers and loved it good night life jump on the backpackers crawl we done it on a wednesday thinking it was going to to quiet but it went off. Hostel was good close to everything and clean room we stayed in a 4 bed dorm. There is a bar at the hostel so cant bring your own drink in we tried but got caught. bar was good tho cheep beers. All up would recommend surfers paradise to anyone and backpackers in paradise is the place to stay.
One of the best!
Backpackers in Paradise is quite possibly one of the best hostels I have stayed in. The staff were great, rooms were clean, and the location of the hostel was awesome! Backpackers in Paradise has their own bar, so you can't bring your own alcohol but the drinks are so cheap there is no need to bring in your own! Backpackers in Paradise is a must for anyone looking at staying in Surfers!
I've been there with my girlfriend and I've to confess is not the best place if you want have a good and romantic time, believe in me, your girlfriend will complain about the cleanliness. But if you are going by your own or with friends, have fun! I'm sure you will have other priorities in your mind. Even because it's a cheap hostel.
