The Hostelz.com Review
Woodduck Backpackers in Cairns is a very nice place to stay. We've come across quite some people who were going to stay here for just a few days and ended up staying for two months. Because this hostel is small, it gives you a warm feeling; everybody knows each other and the atmosphere is great. The staff are very friendly and helpful with everything you need.

The Location

The hostel is located just a couple of minutes walk from the city centre. All shops, supermarkets, bars, restaurants, and the Cairns Lagoon are very close by. The street is still quite quiet during the night though. They pick you up from the airport or bus stop if you give them a call. Free parking is available in front of the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are fairly big for the number of beds in it. They've got six-share and nine-share dorms, all nice and spacious. A bonus is that every dorm room has its own bathroom. They are clean and have got multiple shelves to put your toiletries on.

Common Spaces

There is a kitchen with two big fridges and shelves for your dry food. There is a nice outside area to eat your food and socialize with other backpackers. There is also a swimming pool at the hostel, surrounded by palm trees. With a TV room, internet in the reception, a free luggage storage room, a big garden area with sitting areas and hammocks to relax in, there's a lot of common space in the hostel. They also give you free breakfast and free dinner! For the dinner you get a ticket every day to get a meal from a bar/restaurant called the Woolshed. It's absolutely free!

Summary

We were really surprised by this hostel -- it's a very happy, friendly place to stay. It is clean and tidy and in a great location. It's everything you need, really.

5 Clean, very nice staff, best place ever!
the woodduck is a great place to stay, we had a lot of fun and it's nice and relaxed. really friendly people and they have nice hammocks to relax in. it's one of the cleanest hostels i've been in so far. it's very close to the city center and they helped me booking my tours and organizing my east coast trip. best place ever!

rosies backpackers is such a great hostel. it's such a chilled out and laidback hostel. the staff is so helpful and you don't get a row for being to noisy when you come in drunk. it's a total party hostel. it was my favourite hostel in cairns -- i'd recommend it to anyone!

2 Note - The photos from the owner showing the beach and mountains are not of the actual hostel.

5 I came to this backpackers at least five times, it was that awesome. I was there for a total of about two months on and off during 2003 and 2004 and then came back for the summer of 2005 and he still remembered me, didn't know I was that memorable! Fully recommend going to stay at this hostel if you want somewhere cheap, with a decent meal, friendly service, and a guarantee to meet new friends and have loadsa fun, we sure did. You must go there.

5 I stayed at Rosie's almost 10 years ago and it was fantastic. In fact, I met one of my best friends there - Martin Tait, from London, England. He stayed there for about two months in 1996 between March and April and worked there for a while. I know he went back later to visit and see the then owners/managers. I'm now travelling to London this Christmas and I'd like to catch up with him again. Unfortunately, I no longer have his contact information. If Martin Tait rings a bell with anyone there, I'd really appreciate if you could let me know if you know how to reach him. I'm at daleks@telus.net. My phone is 250-812-2518. I'm in Victoria, Canada. Thanks Rosie's!

5 I visited Rosie's over ten years ago during my trip to Australia. My plan was to stay for a week, but I stayed for two. When I left, having misty eyes, I said "I'll come back one day." I still hope I will.

5 I stayed in Rosie's for two weeks, then I left to work in Cape York for a while (a job I got through the hostel). Then I came back here for another two weeks. It's such a great place to stay. It's quite small, so everyone gets to know each other. And Pete, the manager, is a gem! I would recommend it to everyone!
