The Hostelz.com Review
Note: This hostel now has a new owner and management (and a new name) and they say they have fixed some of the issues mentioned in this review. We plan to have a reviewer go back to write a new review at some point in the future.

Rosie's Backpackers is a party hostel. If that's not what you're looking for, you would be better off looking elsewhere. It isn't a well organised, clean, tidy, and respected place. It's just a place to soak up the sun, drink, and party.

We booked ahead and were told that we'd be picked up from the bus station. Well, on arrival, there were many backpacker buses, but sadly, no bus from Rosie's. So we tried to phone the hostel, but alas -- our call kept being put straight to answermachine! So we walked. It's a good fifteen- to twenty-minute walk from the bus station and you need a map. On our arrival, there was no explanation for the lack of a bus. Apparently -- the phone was broken too.

We set off to our dormitory -- only to find the keys didn't work. When they were replaced, the dorm was found to be full. When we finally got to our room, an eight-bed dorm, one couldn't tell which bed was actually free. The room was fairly clean with the bathroom loaded with tolietries and beer bottles from the other backpackers.

Rosie's is quite small. It appears bigger, but the whole place can be navigated in seconds. It has a relatively good kitchen, a laundry with cold wash only, a fairly adequate TV room, and fairly nice pool. There are many backpackers here who are around purely to party and get loudly drunk. Indeed a large group of backpackers were extremely loud until the early hours of the morning on our stay.

The reception is generally unreliable. It's small, opens for short periods of time, lacks an actual reception desk, and contains internet facilities (only available when reception is -- so not often). A free breakfast and evening meals are available. Barbecues are also held on Sundays.

Rosie's is a young, untidy, party-style backpackers hostel, but lacks the facilities and space to be a great all around hostel. As indicated, it appears the backpackers rule here. Only recommended if you're under 25 and purely in Cairns to stay up all night and drink and soak up the sun.

rosies backpackers is such a great hostel. it's such a chilled out and laidback hostel. the staff is so helpful and you don't get a row for being to noisy when you come in drunk. it's a total party hostel. it was my favourite hostel in cairns -- i'd recommend it to anyone!

2 Note - The photos from the owner showing the beach and mountains are not of the actual hostel.

5 I came to this backpackers at least five times, it was that awesome. I was there for a total of about two months on and off during 2003 and 2004 and then came back for the summer of 2005 and he still remembered me, didn't know I was that memorable! Fully recommend going to stay at this hostel if you want somewhere cheap, with a decent meal, friendly service, and a guarantee to meet new friends and have loadsa fun, we sure did. You must go there.

5 I stayed at Rosie's almost 10 years ago and it was fantastic. In fact, I met one of my best friends there - Martin Tait, from London, England. He stayed there for about two months in 1996 between March and April and worked there for a while. I know he went back later to visit and see the then owners/managers. I'm now travelling to London this Christmas and I'd like to catch up with him again. Unfortunately, I no longer have his contact information. If Martin Tait rings a bell with anyone there, I'd really appreciate if you could let me know if you know how to reach him. I'm at daleks@telus.net. My phone is 250-812-2518. I'm in Victoria, Canada. Thanks Rosie's!

5 I visited Rosie's over ten years ago during my trip to Australia. My plan was to stay for a week, but I stayed for two. When I left, having misty eyes, I said "I'll come back one day." I still hope I will.

5 I stayed in Rosie's for two weeks, then I left to work in Cape York for a while (a job I got through the hostel). Then I came back here for another two weeks. It's such a great place to stay. It's quite small, so everyone gets to know each other. And Pete, the manager, is a gem! I would recommend it to everyone!
