Interesting
Lived at this hostel for three months in 2004. Was really cheap and a good atmosphere and had a few cool staff. The bar drink specials were good and it is in a great location -- right across the road from cairns central shopping centre and only a few minutes walk to all bars in the centre of town. Facilities are pretty bad though. Small rooms -- lots of people with bed bugs, crap showers, no air conditioning.

i stayed in that hostel six years ago. The only reason why we stayed there was it was cheap, we were drunk all the time, and we didn't give a f*** about charlie.

Words can't describe how awful this place was. Only stayed one night -- cockroaches and no air conditioning or fans made it unbearable. Always get receipts when you pay for accommodation in Australia -- they'll screw you any chance they get! Owner accused us of not paying when we were checking out and we had to contact the staff member that we paid to verify that we did. A disgrace and complete exploitation of backpackers! Don't give then your hard earned money!!

Well, I am proud to say I worked at this hostel for a whole two weeks as a cleaner! I tried! it was properly rank and was beyond help. Huge cockroaches in the utensil-less kitchen, bedbugs everywhere although somehow me and my boyfriend escaped them. Luckily for me I was working to get free accommodation so didn't need to worry about being paid. The other workers were great, I really did have an excellent time here, everybody was getting ripped off by Charlie so we all ripped him off in return. So thanks charlie for all the free booze and free meals and thanks for the sheets I took for my campervan.

well, I've stayed at Leo's twice. first time was before Charlie arrived and Marcus was in charge. this was some time ago in 2003. it was dirty and full of bedbugs but the people who stayed there and the staff made it worthwhile. we had crazy parties every night. towards the end of my first stay charlie arrived and the atmosphere changed completely. staff didn't get paid and girls got groped. i returned to cairns in early 2005 and ended up staying at leo's again. once again the people who stayed there made my time worthwhile, although when charlie and his security/maintenance man (bobby) hit my two friends and threw them out on the street at one in the morning I finally moved out and most of my friends came with me. charlie is such a horrible man I can't believe he hasn't been locked up. The police said it wasn't worth pursuing an assault charge as it would take too long and my friends would have left the country before it came to court. great!!

My God, don't ever go near this bloody portal to hell. The manager is actually the spawn of Satan, and in his own twisted mind finds it acceptable to molest the girls and abuse the hell out of any and all. Stay somewhere else if you don't want bedbugs either.

Don't put yourself through the effort of having your key deposit stolen by an absolute cock who'll f*** off to Port Douglas and party your money away. Charlie is the most disgusting man, he should be put away for sexual harassment, cheating the tax department, not paying any staff, dogs in swimming pools, and for a building riddled with nest upon nest of bedbugs. Get out of there, there are plenty of other hostels, one or two blocks down from Leo's, same prices, much nicer management and owners. It's being taken over any day now, so steer clear for a month or two until you're sure Charlie's been kicked out of Leo's and hopefully put away.

GROSS! I stayed one night here and woke up at 5AM to pack my bags and find another place to sleep for the rest of my time in Cairns. It may be cheap, but its worth a few bucks to feel safe and clean.

I stayed at Leo's for a few months, and in that time I met a beautiful person who is now my boyfriend so I will forever have great memories. The staff are the coolest, especially Rob, Chanel, Linda and Alli. It was a huge party and for that reason I loved it. But the owner . . . girls, be warned if he comes near you hold your arse and grab your skirt. he should be locked up. I'm talking about this from personal experience. He is a dirty, sleazy, gross, hairy old man. He is pushy, rude and needs to get a new job, maybe as a bouncer in a strip joint or a pimp on the corner. The hostel is more than a bit dirty but if a dirty toilet, kitchen, beds, living area and eating space doesn't faze you, you will totally enjoy the experience of Leo's.

The people I meet in Leo's were lovely, friendly and fun. It's a great place to meet people. As for Charlie, he's the biggest WANKER I've ever met. Women watch your backs, he's a dirty old man!!! Yeah it's not the cleanest and facilities aren't the best, but its good craic. It's amazing how the atmosphere changes when Charlie's not around. Everyone is happier, in better form, etc. That's customers and staff, by the way!!!

For your own health and mental safety (especially girls) do NOT stay here! Now I can hardly afford the nicest hostels but this place takes the piss. Bedbugs rule the whole hostel. The one good thing is the staff are a good bunch. That is, until you meet the manager, Charlie. What a pervert! He'll use any chance to cop a feel of the nearest female. Five of us girls stayed here for a while, now we're all in therapy!

The place stinks. Charlie doesn't pay you for any work you do for him. Please don't stay here. The health department need to be informed, so do the tax companies, etc.

For some reason, really laid back people who know how to party and have a good time stay at Leo's Backpackers. I had a great time there, WITH THE PEOPLE. The main drawback of Leo's is the slimy, dirty, lonely, despicably cruel, woman-molester and tyrant that runs the place, whose name is Charlie. You will grow to detest this man, whether you work there or not, although, if you are staff your level of disgust will run deeper, because of his snake like qualities. While he was a short-term boss of mine I referred to him as a snake with a head at both ends, because whatever you did, you would get in trouble for — you were never safe. But like I said, the people are great, so if you can put up with Charlie this can be a fun place.

I've been to a few backpackers in Cairns (that weren't all they were cracked up to be) before I ended up at Leo's. "WOW." I never wanted to leave. It is a fantastic place. I loved it. The bar "pumped," the cafe was "cool," the people were so easy-going and the staff were heaps nice. It felt like home to me. And as for "Charlie," he's the best guy there!! And he helped me heaps. GREAT HOSTEL. Thanks, Leo's. I will be back!! Soon, hee hee.
