Great Location good staff, better location, best breakfast! — Anonymous , USA (2011-11-29)
Cheap with low standards Filthy dirty, even after the weekly "deep cleaning", and well worn rooms. Storage room is way to small, and you'll be lucky to get to your pack, if you left it in the back of the room. Common area has TV with all the channels you can wish for, incl. Setanta Sports. However, the couch does not have one space that's not cut up. As a matter of fact it's in such a poor condition a homeless would avoid it! Fridge is way too small and packed with bags, so good luck getting to your bag. Kitchen is alright, but nothing more. Roaches are roaming around, no surprise there. Every afternoon promotion staff from affiliated bars come knocking your door, whether or not you're trying to rest. Front Desk staff seems friendly and helpful, location is the best in town and at 16 $ per night I suppose this is what you have to put up with. — Molinator , Denmark (2010-08-27)

First for backpacking virgins! this was the first hostel i stayed in when i went traveling to oz and everyone was very friendly. the tour desk got us some wicked deals to the gbr and out greyhound tickets! right next to the great lagoon and near the town centre it was a great location and you felt really safe too with the security there! just a short walk from the infamous woolshed! the free meals are a good idea if you are broke but they are not that great (yuk) anyway they are cheap, friendly, and all you need from a hostel! — jamie , exeter uk (2008-06-21)

Location is a key factor in hostels, and #89 is right on the Esplanade with its multitude of cafes, tour shops etc, directly across from the fabuloulsy popular and rather nice free lagoon pool complex, five minutes walk from the new pier complex where all the dive boats and daily reef and island cruise vessels leave from, and on the edge of the central business district for supermarkets, clubs and other activities.
It is located in a fifties era building and at first glance seems a bit old and drack. But the place was clean, had nice big bathrooms with lots of lovely hot water at peak shower periods. The bedrooms were small and my four share dorm was pretty squeezy with all occupants and their gear. It had old somewhat rickety double decker bunks which proved surprisingly comfy and were not creaky/noisy and didn'y rock and roll as much as I expected when people turned over. There was a fan plus a coin aircon for the hotter months. The kitchen had sufficient cookers and refrig space, but there was a shortage of pans for cooking. There is a small indoor/outdoor pool which looks okay but who needs it now the Lagoon is across the road? Front counter and cleaning staff were friendly and helpful. Altogether this place was much better than I expected when I couldn't get the original place I wanted (memo -- book ahead in Cairns in dry season). — Tezza (2006-08-04)

Helpful staff with plenty of activities to do. It was clean and the kitchens were good. Overall it was good, although the rooms were small. The location was excellent, though! — Simon Ashley (2005-08-31)
