DONT GO WARNING DONT GO!!! I was promised work the next day, turned out there was none at all, with most of the backpackers there not working. and when i finally got some work, it was just 3 hours (which i still havnt been paid). its really expensive for what you get ($190 a week which would get your own apartment for) then for no reason kicked a load of us out on a sunday. Eugine is the biggest prick you will ever meet. — rorywsmith , uk (2012-05-07)

Shame its gone downhill I stayed here about 15 years ago and got engaged to my now husband there too. Bruce and June owned it then and they were such a lovely couple and it was a great hostel and we made some great life long friends there. Work was hard but was an experience i will always remember. such a shame its once good name has been dragged through the mud by (what sounds like) an absolute twat. — gabby , uk (2012-04-30)

It is partially what you make it I stayed here for 4 months. In the beginning me and my 2 friends were miserable and thought to ourselves: where the hell have we ended up?" there was no work even though we were promised, like everyone else. Got up at 3.30am to wait and see if anyone was to sick or hung over to work. And the manager Eugene was a d*ck. Because of the crash, one of my friends had to go home to sweden, broken collarbone, and she just felt awful before so the crash did not make it better. This was just after a few weeks. All because Poogene forced a girl to drive a huge van-like car on those terrible roads. So the two of us that were left stayed for another 3 months or so. And Eugene is just a complete assh*le with no morals or even common sense. He is just a horrible person. Even though the bundabergers working there were tw*ts I had the time of my life! After about a month I got good work, picking packing sweet potatoes. The place bundaberg is pretty boring as many says but you can take the bus and go to the beach so its ok. And of course there is the goon, that helps. Also I only managed to stay for so long because of all the amazing people I met. Now I have friends for life and I dont regret for one second going to Bundy. Yes lots and lots of bedbugs there too. They were not worse than Eugene though. — M , Sweden (2012-04-22)
Criminals! There is no work. They give you enough work. (10 hours a week) so you can pay your rent! — Anonymous , dutch (2012-04-04)
Bundaberg is a kind of boring I live in Bundaberg -- don't come here for a good time, there is not much for tourists to do, sorry. Working on the farms is very hard, hot work, none of the locals do it because they know how hard it is, the farmers rely on backpackers because they don't know how hard the work is, plus the pay is really poor. Bundaberg is not right on the beach, it is about 15 minutes drive to the beach. A lot of backpackers come here and are disappointed because there is no beach. Bundaberg has a fair few low paid or unemployed people which are what a lot of the back packers calls 'hicks', some back packers have reported problems with being harassed by locals, i've never seen it but i'm sure it does happen. Most people will help you if you ask them kindly with directions etc. For fun things to do your main area is the beach at Bargara, you can snorkel at the reef right out the front when the tide is low and there is not much waves (mainly in winter). — Anonymous , Australia (2012-02-21)
Do not stay here When I called I was promised work the next day I don't get any work for two weeks and when I did I was picking for $3 per bucket. He took my passport I had to pay $50 to get it back. I went to the police and they say it a weekly problem but they can't do any think about it. Also there where bed bugs. No opening windows in my bedroom so if there was a fire in the hall well lets not go there. All in all hell on earth. — Dan , Uk (2012-01-09)
WORST PLACE EVER HE STOLE MY PASSPORT AND LIED ABOUT THE WORK. HE IS A CROOK AND A THEIF, NOT TO MENTION HIS ROARING TEMPER AND ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR. — Anonymous , IRISH (2011-12-29)
BEDBUGS, NO JOBS, AWFUL RECEPTION DO NOT STAY HERE. We stayed here for one night, booked 7 because we wanted to work here. They promise you work, but to get decent paid work every day is nearly impossible. So you end up paying money for a dirty and unfriendly hostel with millions of bedbugs! also it has a too small kitchen and poor facilities. DO NOT STAY HERE! IT IS NOT EVEN A REAL WORKING HOSTEL. SPEND YOUR TIME AND MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE!! — Mars , Germany (2011-11-23)
Do yourself a favor and dont waste your time and money ... ... in this awful backpackers. I and two friends were looking for work so I called the harvesttrail. They told me to come to Bundaberg Backpackers as it is a Working-Hostel that is now offering jobs as fruitpickers. At the phone the receptionist Eugene told me that they have jobs for us three for immediate start and 19$ per hour. Sounds great. Right before check-in we asked another time as we didn't believe this was so easy. Receptionist: Oh I'm sorry we have no job for you tomorrow. But if you are lucky you can get one on tuesday. But you'll work not later than wednesday. You are paid at least 19$/h.
Lies. No work on tuesday, on wednesday, on thursday, on friday and so on. As I heard from others who had a job those jobs are not paid per hour - of course not ... Besides, these jobs are not even 5 days per week, its a couple of hours (3-5) on 3-4 days. If you are lucky you are able to pay the accommodation. To make people to stay in the Hostel the staff tells some people to have a day off and then they send new persons to do this job for a day to give the hope to get a job. A girl was told she'll get a job on Friday for sure. On Friday the receptionist told her that the job starts on Monday. To get this job she had to pay for another week. On Monday the receptionist told her there is no job. Another 190 Dollars for nothing. Yesterday evening we told the receptionist that we'll leave the Hostel on Sunday. (You have to tell the three days in advance to check out or you have to pay 50$. Because the farmer should know about it.) The woman told us to tell her today another time because she planned to close the reception. So we did a few minutes ago. It was Eugene who was now at the reception. He didn't believe us that we told her so he called her. After it he told us that we can't say to check-out in the evening so we would have to pay 50 dollars although there isn't even a farmer who has to know that we are leaving as they didn't get us the promised job. At this point: A cordial ~F*** You!~ to Eugene for being the most dishonest person I've ever known. short overview: Staff: dishonest, false, money-grubbing, covetous ... tell you lies. Don't trust them! I can't believe how they are not so ashamed that they can look at themselves in the mirror. Bathrooms (male): 3 Showers, 2 toilets - shared. Ants, ants, and did I mention the ants yet? But: Sometimes the ants are vacuum-cleaned. Sometimes ... Rooms: Depends - In my room (8 Dorm) was enough space for us. Others were so small that you couldn't get in without stepping on a bag because of too little space. Bins are cleaned out weekly, but the whole room is never cleaned (found a yoghourt from 07/2010, blotches on floor and walls). Beds: Full of bedbugs. Some are broken but won't be repaired. Kitchen/equipment: small kitchen with almost no equipment and those which is existent is old, crooked and rusted. Lockers: Don't work. Some are not lockable, Others can be opened by nearly every key. Life is short. Don't waste your time in Bundaberg Backpackers. — Juri M. , Germany (2011-10-06)
Your lives are in danger if you stay at this hostel I stayed at this hostel back in 2008 and am astonished to see that it is still trading especially with Eugene still in charge. At the time I was there the then owners sold out to Eugene and the tyrant began to abuse anyone and everyone who was there. He would pick fights, physical and mental with everyone, boy, girl, man, woman, foreign. Do not stay ever at this hostel, I feel sorry for anyone or the staff who have to put up with this abusive man. Driving Licences are not checked and vehicles are not in a roadworth condition or maintained. There are plenty of other hostels or backpackers to stay at either in Bundaberg or surrounding areas than this place. Any abusive behaviour should be report to the local Police and the local MP. You do have rights as a traveler -- Human Rights -- something Eugene fails to recognise. — Anonymous , British (2011-07-30)
I would do time in prison with pleasure i would do time in prison with pleasure to take a baseball bat to that fat prick eugunes face. i have never in my life met such a wanker. for a person who runs a hostel he has no people skills at all. i will say one thing though, he is f***in as cute as a fox. he only picks on people smaller than he is because he knows they wont fight back. i have seen him with my own eyes push a girl down the steps of the hostel. i spent 6 months there, work was very average, and i was prob one of the lucky ones. bedbugs everywhere. the only reason i stayed so long was the people, met some of the nicest people ever there. my only regret is not seeing that FAT C*NT get a punch in the face while i was there. it will happen someday if it hasnt already. STAY AWAY. — G , Irish (2011-06-12)

What you make of it I spent 3 months here and I think they can be described as the worst ... and best times of my life. The hostel wasn't great, but compared to other working hostels it's not that much worse. Yes, Eugene can be an idiot. But if you go there with the right attitude and are willing to work hard you will find work, not to mention some great friends. — Anonymous , British (2011-04-09)
Dangerous, do not stay here This owner has been known to send young female backpackers out in land rovers to transport themselves and other backpackers to work on fruit/veg farms. There was a crash yesterday as a result of them forcing (no work if you dont drive) a young girl with minimal driving experience to drive 10 girls out to a manadarin crop. Some of the injured girls had to stay at the hostel after the accident and the owner was very rude and aggressive towards them. — Anonymous , UK (2011-04-09)
STAY AWAY FROM THIS HELL HOLE AND EUGENE THE OWNER I would tell anyone I met to stay away from this place, as you are ripped off by eugene and his rip off regime, the guy is a thieving bastard and should not be not trusted. As well as arrogant, pathetic and a coward. My sister and I were promised work from day one, like most backpackers who came days after. I did not work for 7 days while there, as excuses were made by the staff there about weather and farmers. While my sister got work there for a few days with a good farmer, Eugene fell out with a good mango farmer as he tends to do so often with farmers -- surprise surprise, no manners or respect for anyone. The condition of the hostel is shocking, poor showers that have filthy floors, what the cleaner does is a mystery to me, as she is as useful as a pair of wellies on ice. The rooms are like prison cells with no windows and poor ventilation. Kitchen is roaming with ants on the shelves and cookers are old scrap heaps that belong in a skip. The common room is like an old rundown youth club, as it has a ripped up pool table and wonky ping pong table, which is the most exciting thing in it. Also be warned eugene well not give you your 50 dollar deposit back unless you give him 3 days notice, which is a good excuse to rob you more like myself, best advice if you wanna leave quickly refuse any payments and tell eugene to kiss were the sun don't shine. He threatens police to throw you out as well when you disagree with him so stand your ground and tell him to go ahead, as you need to tell them about eugene and his spineless scams.190 DOLLARS for what, really consider what I am saying to you. Stay away from this sh*thole, although many hostels are bad around bundaberg from what other backpackers have told me. — Conor Smith , ireland (2011-01-30)

Used to be good. I was there with my friend for about 6 months, yes 6 months about 3 years ago. Sue and Gary owned it then. Eugene took over in the last couple of months of or stay. Sue and Gary were great. Sue was tough, but fair. We were in the Bus Stop part for most of our time there, then moved elsewhere. Work was always there, the place was clean, made heaps of friends, affordable rent -- nothing bad to say. As soon as Eugene turned up, aircon was turned on only at night, rent went up, bedbugs not taken care of, people getting kicked out for stupid reasons. Not like it was. Its such a shame it has gone downhill. Was a good place to stay. — oli82 , New Zealand (2011-01-10)
