JoAn's Hostal

Hostelz.com's Review

With its brand-spanking-new facilities and knowledgeable and friendly staff, JoAn's Hostal hasn't been in business long and is working hard to develop a reputation. In a cheap (by Western standards) country, some people may overlook this place in favour of marginally cheaper accommodation elsewhere -- don't let yourself be one of them.

The Location

Located in a relatively safe neighbourhood (certainly by San Salvador's standards), JoAn's is surrounded by an abundance of excellent restaurants, including family-owned pupuserias (a shop that sells pupusas, a local tortilla dish) and Western-style Italian restaurants. The bar scene is further afield, but easily reached by a short, ten-minute taxi ride.

The hostel itself can be a challenge to find, as there is no apparent signage to identify it. The small park Capri to the right of the hostel is a landmark; the hostel resembles a good-sized family home located in a new, well-kept building next door.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are a mixture of four-bed dorm rooms and private doubles. The dorms are rather small and when full of large backpacks they can be a little cramped. The mattresses are brand new and the owners have invested in good covers that will ensure a good night's sleep. The lack of lockers is certainly a concern, but we are sure in time that enough travelers will raise this as an issue and the owners will take this advice.

The showers are incredible. Not only is the water hot and easily adjustable, but the pressure is also probably even better than you have in your own house. The free, fragrant shower gel dispensers are a nice touch and demonstrate the attention to detail of the owners and the pride they take in their business.

Common Spaces

Completely spotless and laden with new, fashionable furniture, the front room is a great place to hang out and meet fellow travelers. There is a small outside area at the back featuring a TV, couch, and an array of books that can be borrowed. There is also an open-air patio for the smokers. The kitchen is relatively small but adequate for the size of hostel. Free coffee and purified water are available all day.

Keen and eager to impress, the staff seem willing to bend over backward to offer help and advice for their customers. It is evident from their attitude and the facilities that they have invested time and money in this venture and are eager to make it succeed. From what we have seen, there is no doubt in our minds that they will, and JoAn's will quickly become one of the most popular hostels in San Salvador -- if not the most popular hostel in San Salvador!

Great Choice!
Visited JoAns Hostal during Semana Santa and really enjoyed my time there. It is in a nice location, the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, had hot water, and the room and bathroom all to myself! I wanted to go to the movies and the amazing staff even called a taxi for me and suggested the best movie theater for me. I know basic spanish and was able to get around with ease with their assistance. Disliked -- nothing.
