The Hostelz.com Review
Yellow Submarine Backpackers is a hostel with a lot of character. The building is set into the side of the hill, which makes for lots of little nooks and crannies to explore in the design of the building. The hostel provides great facilities, such as cheap internet access and laundry, pool table, and swimming pool.
The Location
The hostel is located on Quay Street, about a five-minute walk from Roma Street station (the main train and bus station in Brisbane). It is located near several other backpackers, but is just off the main street, so there are less traffic noises. It is however, near the train line, and you can sometimes hear the trains in the early morning. Parking facilities on the street are limited, so you may need to park a little further away from the hostel if you are driving.
There is a Coles supermarket about a five-minute walk away, as well as many bars and restaurants. The bridge to West End is nearby as well, making a walk to this area where many bars and cafes are be found, about a fifteen-minute walk away. It is also about a ten-minute walk to the State Library, where there is free, high-speed Wi-Fi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers dorms of several different sizes. The dorms are clean and comfortable, with tables and shelves provided inside. A really nice touch in the girls dorm is the inclusion of full-length mirrors. The bathrooms are very clean, and each shower also has a sink in the cubicle, giving some privacy when getting dressed.
Common Spaces
There are several common areas in the hostel all over the property. There is TV room near the kitchen with couches and coffee tables. Also, outside, but under a roof, there are long benches for dining. Around the side of the hostel, there is another semi-outdoor area with couches and a pool table. Finally, there is also the pool area, where guests can relax after a day in the city.
Summary
Overall, this hostel is very good value for money. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the hostel is incredibly comfortable. The location also cannot be beat, with everything you need all within walking distance.

Return to the sub going back to the sub aug '12 after 14 years when worked there (kathy). Visiting with Jim (who I met at the sub) and with our two children. I don't care how the place looks, for me has the fondest memories and I now have two beautiful children as a result. — kathy , UK (2012-01-12)

10 Wonderful hostel! Staff are fantastic, Ken the owner cooks up free dinners every Sunday which are delicious. Rooms are cheap, and you get what you pay for, basic but very clean. Good facilities, and close to everything. — Markus , German (2010-05-20)

Great place to stay in the city I had a great time at the Yellow Submarine. The staff were helpful and the place welcoming. It's a great location for getting around and seeing Brisbane and accessing Southbank. — Penny , Canada (2010-01-22)

Amazing If you are a backpacker and you want to meet people, this is the right hostel for you. (Most) of the staff are very nice and helpful and they really do know their way around Brisbane and can help you to find good sights to see on a budget. Once a week you get free food and you don't have to use the kitchen which is a bit too small for all the people. It gets cleaned every day and every facility is clean too. You don't have any en-suites and that might be the only problem there, because there are not enough showers for all the people and except one, you can't lock them. But I loved my two weeks here and will definitely come back! — me (2009-09-08)

Great! This hostel is great! The staff is very polite and helpful! The rooms were very clean and they made you feel as if you were at home. They have free food every Sunday with the owner Ken coming and and really taking care of us. It is nice and pleasant to sleep in at night and the staff really works with you to help you find everything you need to while your stay in Brisbane. The place is really old, but its well worth the price! It is a very nice place to sleep in and i recommend it to anyone! — Pleased Costumer (2009-08-17)

Good enough spot I stayed here for 3 months in '08 and a few weeks on and off in '09. Have to admit it was a fantastic place the first time around. There were punch parties which were probably the highlight of the week. Small hostel so you get to know everyone fairly quickly. When I came back in '09, Judy wasn't there so Ken had pretty much taken over. There was a night watchman (no need for this I think) and the atmosphere had definitely been lost. No more punch parties either and the electricity gets turned off at 10pm outside so no music can be played. It was a lot stricter but still had it's good moments. They were helpful with getting work as well. People say it's dirty, I think it's cultured. Although I don't like that you can't write on the tables, but you can write on the walls??? — Paul T , Ireland (2009-08-02)

Watch out Really great people and staff but watch out for the owner Ken, he's a complete psycho that would be more at home in 1930s germany. — not a fan of ken , england (2009-07-10)

It is a nice hostel, nice people, and very comfortable i had a nice stay at this place. Maybe different people are owning it now because the staff were very friendly to me. room was comfortable. It is an old building but it is clean and tidy. — Fabien , France (2009-04-29)
Worst Hostel ever! Booked into this "so called" hostel and advised staff that we would be arriving early that morning. When we arrived we were met by a very rude staff member and she didnt even show us around. We had booked three nights but left after one. The rooms were horrible -- small and stuffy. Toilets were so unhygienic. We didnt even venture to the kitchen as from what we saw at the front door and our room, we thought our health would be in danger. Dont be fooled by the pictures -- it's fit to fall apart. stay away from this place, better booking a space on the street! — Maria , Ireland (2009-03-27)
Hellhole Dont do it! you would be better sleeping on the streets! Dirty and skanky! the beds stank of insecticide and while we were there the bathroom was full of hair! not of the head variety! gross! we booked for three nights and escaped after one though we should have got the hell out of their straight away! — NA , BRITISH (2008-07-30)
Very poor, bad experience I stayed there with three friends -- we told them were were gonna check in late. so they told me they would leave a key out (and they didnt). after standing out in the cold for two hours or so, a guest let us in. when the staff showed us our room she told me that it was strange us staying there because they normally only take International guests. i was like are you joking, and she was serious. rooms were crap. we didnt sleep any of the night because the people next door were having a party at 3 a.m. -- price was cheap but i should have slept in the gutter. would strongly suggest people stay away from this hostel. — rusty , australian (2008-03-17)
Staff was good, but owner sucked (told me where to park and I got a ticket, when I mentioned that he should be more careful telling people where to park, he raised his voice at me and told me to stop being a crybaby). Pretty rundown. Fun guests, but there are other places in town, why bother? — Mike Brown (2006-09-28)

Had an amazing time at this place, I went back at lease three times during my twelve months in Oz between April '05 and April '06. It may not be the most attractive place, but you're staying in a hostel not the Ritz! Everyone there made my stay the best experience of my life. — Laura (2006-09-26)

its great to see this hostel hasnt changed. i stayed there for three months in 1999 even ended up working there. got some great jobs too its definitely not the ritz but a once in a lifetime experience. — stephanie hine (2006-06-21)

I stayed at the Yellow Sub for one week and it wasn't long enough. The staff were friendly and had many suggestions on finding jobs and things to do in Brisbane. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. There is a great pool in the back to laze around sunny days and the chilling area is unique and inviting. Prices are comparable to every other hostel in Brisbane -- beleive me, I checked. I would recommend this hostel to anyone coming to Brisbane -- its fun, clean and comfortable. — Carly (2006-03-02)
