3  Not the best, but much fun had in 1999. Myself and then-Girlfriend now WIFE. travelled OZ back in 1999-2000, had the best time of our lives and met some life long companions along the way. As previously quoted, this place is for the workers whom need to earn money, the sugar and banana farming will provide constant work opportunities to those whom are skint, hardened and don't have rich parents and OCD. simply because they are not seasonal in the North, as is south crop rotation such as oranges and vineyards. We had some great times with STEVE and MONIQUE. They entrusted us to run the Establishment for 2.5 weeks whilst they were away on vacation, we had a Ball!! Oz is for Travelers whom TRAVEL or Ozzies whom are LOVELY people whom are very Hospitable.  , English ()
1  Horrible Backpacking in Oz for 8 month and this was the worst hostel ever. Dirty with cockroaches, leaks, tiny rooms, get so bored u think, that's when I noticed lack of fire escapes, my room 4 metres by 2 had 2 bunk beds, no window, no natural lite, and a code to get in. So in a fire it would be bye bye. During my time there I got eaten alive by bedbugs, my friends was so bad she's been scared for life and had multiple trips to the doctor for bites getting infected, probably from the trickle of cold water also known as a shower. These bedbugs made work at 5 a.m. a joy, just to get out of the sh*t hole. Kitchens were sh*t, everything broken, and electric in hostel repeated turning off for long periods. oh and then there's the break in that happened when I wad here resulting in blood everywhere, the place smashed up, and one guy badly beaten. Internet was a rip off as was the price per week. owners were nice/good at finding work, other staff members were cocks, I would recommend the gutter before this place!!! Was very happy to leave  , UK ()
3  Awesome if you dont mind hard work!! I stayed here in may 2005.The hostel was not in the best of conditions when i stayed there but the people made up for that, we had a wicked time. If you dont mind hard work in banana paddocks its the place to go. Just make sure you avoid the zoo bar -- it's crazy in there!  , england ()
1  Sh*t! Stayed there for five months and i can say to you that this hostel is ultimate sh**hole! Firstly you pay 140$ per week for the room with four double beds (eight people!) and you can't imagine that noise! Oh ya, i forgot to mention that with the bed you get bedbugs! 140$! Showers are crappy, roof is leaking in kitchen and couple rooms. I remember the days when i was making food in kitchen and water was dripping almost in to my food. Oh, remembered one more! Cooking pans are totally fu***up! They are at least four years old and all Teflon is long gone, i wold imagine that they could buy new ones with the money they ripoff (about 16 000$ a week) but no they wont! All the farmers are total assholes, they treat you like a slave and if you don't have any saving to leave then you pretty much are slave. Only way to enjoy your stay in this hostel (innisfail) is to get really stoned every day, and to drink a lot and of course that means that you spend all your money and will have to work more! So this hostel is truly the deepest, darkest, most unpleasant sh**hole I've been in. If you can don't go there!  , Finland ()
5  A Good Workers Hostel I stayed there in 1999 for about five weeks I think. I still have friends from that time. I made enough money to travel to WA overland and had a hell of a character building life experience. As workers hostels go it is very good. They do find you work (in season) and the basic facilities are good. It's as clean as an agri-workers hostel gets. Most importantly the owner Steve is a good guy and not a rip off merchant with no interest in his guests. You need to be realistic about what to expect. Agri work is tough in lots of places but Queensland banana country is by far the toughest. It's sub tropical so expect it to be wet, dirty, heavy work. The locals are friendly and decent but it's a poor farming community not a metropolitan hub so adjust your expectations. If you're a princess type this isn't for you. But if you can rough it a little it's as good an option as any workers hostel.  , Scotland ()
4  Basic but proud to call my home I stayed here for a month, my first impression was that I've just checked myself into Jail as there were so many iron bars! but I did not want to leave. The staff bend over backwards to find you work any day of the week, even overtime. You get paid by the hour and weekly, decent wages too! The free bus to the beach and waterfalls at the weekend is a great touch. Ten-second walk to the Bottleshop -- bonus! If you stay here go to the Imperial Bar on the river on a friday night, it's much better than the Commonwealth Bar.  , British ()
5  Sh*t hole but home when i first got there i couldnt believe the sh*t hole i had landed myself in. but it still became home and i made it more of a sh*t hole. stayed there five months in 2005. crazy nights, fridays getting pissed on punch and saturdays getting wrecked at the beach parties. Got stoned every night for five months. those were the days. great people, met some of the best friends i'll ever meet there.  , english ()
1  Yak The worst hostel I've ever seen. The bed was awful, it was really noisy, and when you are getting up at 5 a.m. for work, noises until 1 a.m. are not a lot of fun. we had to wait an hour an half sometimes to get picked up from work. all the hostel is really old and need some money to be put in it.  , Canada ()
5  I stayed here with my mate Katie for three months and as a working backpackers you cannot ask for more. Steve and Monique are the best source of work in the local area, if there is work these people will get you working. The Hostel does get dirty, but when there are forty-ish people working in banana paddocks every day this has to be expected.  ()
4  Steve rocks! The time I was there they were working to improve the hostel, I hope they succeeded cause it wasn't all that good. The beds were very uncomfortable and we actually found a frog in the kitchen once. But the atmosphere was brilliant and Steve and Monique are great! We used to have lots of fun in Rumors, the local pub, and with the banana contests in brother's. Thumbs up!!  ()
1  The worst place I have ever stayed in my life. The hostel was disgusting and we had mice and cockraoches. I also cut my hand on nails that were sticking out and it got infected. The locals are not friendly and hate backpackers so expect trouble if you go out! But you will make friends as you're all poor and living in ths sh*thole.  ()
3  The atmosphere in the place only picked up when we arrived there in 2002. Absolute kip of a hostel but it had great people and great drinking sessions and punch parties. They made the stay enjoyable.  ()
3  I was there for four weeks between January and February 2005. The hostel is not of one of the best I stayed in, but the atmosphere is just great! The first days are the hardest, but then you'll enjoy it! And then Steve is great and very kind. I would spend that time there again if I could! I'm back home now and a great part of my thoughts go to this place and some people I met there. If you want to fruit-pick don't miss this place!  ()
5  It's the best place in Australia. I stayed there for nearly five months. Friday night is the best: PUNCH NIGHT, all you can drink. The atmosphere is perfect for relaxing after work, and Steve is a good bloke.  ()
4  I stayed at Budget Backpackers for three months, December 2003 to March 2004. Steve and Monique are great. If you want to work, Steve makes sure that you get work. I really enjoyed my stay there, because of the people who were staying there around the same time. I had the best birthday party ever.  ()
