The Hostelz.com Review
Gladstone Backpackers Hostel is a nice and small family hostel. It's owned by a couple, who run the business and live in the same building, and has a cosy and friendly atmosphere.
The Location
Gladstone is a small town on the east coast of Australia and the departure for several islands in the Great Barrier Reef. The hostel is about ten minutes from the city centre, twenty minutes towards the cinema, and thirty minutes toward the nearest grocery, all walking distances. As Gladstone is orientated about industry, it is much easier to travel around if you have a car. But the owners of the hostel are willing to drop you off at the train station, airport, or marina for free. If you have to go a bit further, the owners ask a small fee for their taxi rides, but it is still much cheaper than a regular taxi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are spacious, clean, and the beds are comfortable. The hostel offers only four-bed dorms and doubles. The dorms are having two bunk beds, a small closet per person, a van, and enough power plugs. Linen is provided for free as well as a towel. The bathrooms are a bit old and small, but the condition is still fine.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is small but clean, with a big fridge and gas stove. The kitchen has all the necessary crockery, cutlery, pots, and pans. They even provide free coffee and tea. The TV room, looks like a living room with a big TV, several pay channels are available as well as some comfortable couches. There is one computer available that you can use for a small fee. The outdoor area is spacious and has a pool, a balcony, and a barbecue, which are available at no extra cost. Parking is free and they even provide bicycles, if you don’t want to walk.
Summary
If you have to stay in Gladstone for a few days, we can definitely recommend this hostel. Don’t expect anything similar to a big city hostel, but it's a friendly and homey hostel.

Homey I stayed here one night to break up the bus trip heading south. I thought it was clean, neat, and quiet -- a smaller, friendly hostel. There were some renovations and landscaping going on including a swimming pool. Free pickup from the bus station and communal tea/coffee/milk, and even a clean towel provided free. I would definitely stay here again. — robert , australia (2007-08-26)

Not bad. It's a bit shabby but it has a very helpful and friendly staff. — Kev (2005-01-24)
