Dirty, mouldy, dilapidated, plain, noisy. Tidy and nice people though. The Manly Astra hostel is a pleasant hostel, which allows comfortable and cheap accommodation the way it should be. Although it can get a bit smelly and loud, the general tidiness and the positive attitude of the other guests and owner definitely make up for it. I would recommend staying here if you are on a budget and would like somewhere that is a bit more relaxed, slower-paced and comfortable than other hostels, which can become a little bit too intense at times. I would not recommend staying here for a cheap holiday or if you have a little bit more cash to splash, as you could get much much better for a little bit more. — Anonymous , Australia (2012-02-05)

Great couples accommodation, quiet clean safe I will go back anytime and recommend to anybody. nice kitchen, courtyard, friendly staff, nice house to feel at home for a while -- all the facilities hot water all the time. wireless, laundry, really architectural staircase with a lots art -- should be a 5 star hotel, not a hostel. I will go back with my mother in law too. — mik from canada , canada (2011-07-21)

The perfect place. I came to the Astra for the first time in the year 2002 and i loved it straight away, since then i am coming back here almost every year for a couple of weeks and the place just gets better and better. I really appreciate the location, only a couple of minutes to the beach, Manly town center or the wharf, so this is the perfect place to discover Manly and Sydney itself. The heart, soul and brain of the place is Robert the manager he is so helpful and friendly and he does a wonderful job in keeping this place clean, secure and quiet. The place is perfect for couples or students but if you are looking for a crazy party place go somewhere else. so i can only recommend this wonderful place which for me has become my home in Sydney. — Markus , Austria (2011-03-07)
Budget, dirty, and owner is a NIGHTMARE!!! I stayed at this house for 4 months and the house was rarely cleaned properly, there are millions of signs on the walls telling you what you cannot do (including what foods you are allowed to eat and when you are allowed to talk in certain rooms!!). The owner of the house Rob obviously runs the house to suit his social life than what could be best for the guests. If you want somewhere you can relax, chat, have friends over or even just watch tv when you like, this is NOT for you!!! I only stayed here that long as it was very cheap, but the rent has just been doubled for no reason and I really wish I'd never stayed there! — Anonymous , Korea (2010-10-31)

Great place to stay we stayed in astra for 3 months while working in sydney in 2010. it was clean and robert is such a great guy, always willing to offer his advice on things. — Andy And Sarah , Uk (2010-10-21)

Quiet, clean, and friendly we stayed here for six months while both working in 1995-96. rob is a great guy -- helpful. great place to stay, location is superb as two hundred yards from manly beach, near to nightlife. had great time there, will never forget. — martyn and jules , uk (2009-09-13)

So cool I had been living here in Astra for four months with very nice flatmates (of course including Robert who is the owner of this house). just one week ago I moved into another flat cause it's little bit far from my work but if I have a chance, i want to go back to Astra and have dinner with them again! I had met a lot of nice people there -- enjoyed my life so much. I won't forget this year what I had been staying in Manly with Astra family. — Susan , KOREA (2007-09-24)

A welcoming place in our time of need. We stayed there for several months in 2004 while we sorted out our new lives in Manly. We couldn't say enough about Robert -- what a kind man. The hostel is well run, it's clean, quiet, secure, has a shared kitchen, and when we were there lovely hot, fast showers. It attracts a good mix of people, young, old, single, couples, and families, many of whom return to Astra on every Sydney visit. We would highly recommend Astra for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle as this is no party house. Really close to the beach and the outdoor pool is just a walk up the hill. — luca & ralf (2006-12-20)

We stayed at the Astra for six months whilst working in Manly in 2001. It became a home from home and we made so many great friends here!
It is kept very clean and Robert is just so helpful and friendly. With the beach literally around the corner it is the perfect location. If it is all night parties in the hostel you are after this is not the place to stay but the pubs are only a short walk away! It was just so nice to come back to a place after a heavy night that we knew would be clean, quiet, and safe. — Jenny and Mark Ellis (2006-09-08)

I stayed here in 1997/1998. I have very fond memories and judging by comments the place hasn't changed with Robert the hostel manager doing a great job. I would definitely recommend it as a friendly, well-run hostel in a fantastic location. — Sarah Evans (2005-08-31)

We stayed here each time we came back to Manly during our travels, as it was so good! Clean, close to everything, and the owner is very friendly and helpful. We want to go back! — Anna and Keith (2005-04-13)

I stayed in this hostel for three months while I was in Sydney. It was just great — Robert is very friendly and the hostel has a homely feel to it. I have to say that the three months I stayed here were the best time I had in Oz, and I met lots of really good friends that I will treasure forever. — Sarah Hughes (2005-01-20)
