Hostelz.com's Review
Man Cheng is a small hostel in the Qingdao old town near the rail station. It's clean and cheerful, nonsmoking, and has wifi throughout. While it lacks a bit of the glamor of some larger hostels in major centres, it has a friendly, feel-at-home type of atmosphere.

The Location

The hostel is situated in the older part of town and is about a five-minute walk from the rail station and a ten-minute bus ride away from the main bus station. It's in an area abundant in low-end hotels and inexpensively- to moderately-priced restaurants, both traditional and modern. Also several corner shops selling the basics are located near the hostel. The nearest beach is only just beyond the rail station and there are several bus routes nearby that can take you to the eastern beaches and sights. If you are going to Yantai, a cheap bus leaves from just outside the hostel; otherwise, the one train a day is much cheaper than the buses. The hostel-supplied directions forget to mention that from the main bus station, the No. 5 bus does not pass in front of it –- so go right on the main road by the bus station, up and over on a flyover, then go under a flyover, and at the T intersection, turn right up a slope and you'll see the stop ahead of you.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All the dorms and private rooms are clean and decorated in cheerful colours, but none have a window. All rooms, dorms and private, have an ensuite and generally have reasonable space. Dorms have contain sturdy, wooden bunk beds but there are neither lockers nor lights at each bunk. The bathroom facilities are fine, with twenty-four-hour hot water and Western toilets. The private rooms are simple and vary from small to spacious. During our stay, in winter, the rooms were well heated; there's aircon for the warmer months.

Common Spaces

The common area contains the reception, which doubles as a small bar with low prices suited to a hostel, and a small lobby/lounge which has a TV and DVD facility, and a free internet PC. It's not spacious but it has a friendly, cosy feel to it. As it is an extension of the reception, the friendly staff regularly interact with the guests. Given the small size, there is neither space for the extras like a pool nor for a kitchen or a self-help laundry.

Qingdao, the home of Tsingtao beer, is an interesting city, with a mixture of historic (mostly German) buildings and modern buildings, and some pretty good beaches; this means that in summer, all accommodation in the city is taken, so it's essential to book ahead of time. Out of season, prices here and throughout the city are heavily discounted. Man Cheng Hostel is mostly patronised by Chinese people, because it is a popular Chinese resort and it's not on the itinerary of most Western tourists, so it is not normally going to be a partying place, but we all need a night off once in a while!
