The Hostelz.com Review
Hostal Sonia is cutest little hostel in Copacabana! Newly renovated at the end of 2010, the place is bright, clean, and homey. Built inside a six level terrace with just a few of rooms on each floor, it is a quiet spot, great for a few days of relaxation. There is a rooftop terrace with views stretching past the town centre over Lake Titicaca -- head up there at sunset for uninterrupted views.
The Location
At the top of the street running behind the cathedral, Hostal Sonia is an easy few minutes' walk to the cafes and market stalls of Copacabana. It's not on the main strip, making it a quieter choice. A five-minute stroll will have you at the lakefront, and for the more adventurous, a thirty-minute hike takes you to the top of the sacred mountain of Kimsa.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are immaculately clean with lots of warm blankets and each has a television. Dorm rooms range from two to six beds per room; most rooms have ensuite bathrooms. There is twenty-four-hour hot water and comfy spring mattresses on all beds. All rooms have windows -- a couple face internally -- but still make the rooms bright and airy. The downside to the dorms is that are no lockers for your valuables.
Common Spaces
Aside from the rooftop and dining area, there is a lack of common areas. Each level has a small open area with a couple of chairs and sometimes a table for socialising -- great when it's too cold to use the rooftop. There is a shared kitchen but it's quite small and feels a bit like you are imposing on the owners' pride and joy.
Summary
The owner, Sonia, cooks up a tasty breakfast for a small price. Sonia and her husband are always around, very friendly, and ready to tell you about the area. Hostal Sonia doesn't boast the party atmosphere of other hostels, but it is an excellent place to stop for a few days on the shores of Bolivia's infamous salt lake.
