The Hostelz.com Review
Backpackers Holiday Village Hostel is undoubtedly a party hostel -- very lively and very loud.

The Location

Byron Bay is a very small town, so with as everywhere here, the hostel is well located, on the main street, and only ten minutes' walk to the beach. Opposite the hostel is the very popular bar Cheeky Monkeys, which offers certain meals for a low price and various drinks promotions.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The bedrooms are very basic. We stayed in a four-share dorm (as most of the rooms available are) which contained two sets of bunk beds, one mirror, one shelf, and one socket. There are no lockers in the rooms or anywhere else in the hostel to put bags or valuables, so we had to keep our valuables on us at all times, which wasn't ideal.

There are two sets of bathrooms available, which once again are very basic and not enough for the number of guests. Every day the toilets are closed for at least an hour for cleaning, however they are certainly not clean -- the floor is covered in sand and the bins are overflowing. There is neither a hand-dryer nor paper towels provided.

Common Spaces

All bedrooms face onto the court yard, which is the main common area. There is also a communal kitchen, swimming pool, and internet area at reception. There is also a travel desk in reception, but during the time we were staying there was no one manning this desk at all. The outdoor pool is quite nice and the courtyard is filled with picnic benches where guests could eat meals. Half of this space has a cover over it, which was fortunate for our stay, as it rained for one full day. The location of this common space does mean that when you are in your room, you can hear everything going on outside. Also because the eating space is outside, people are smoking around where you're eating, which isn't pleasant.

There are some strange rules at the hostel such as having to pay a deposit to get a sheet for your bed and a per-item charge for cutlery/plate/bowl/cup. Also we only discovered this after asking another guest -- no one bothered to tell us this whilst we were checking in. There are also the usual rules such as no drinking/noise after 10:30 p.m., however this one was rarely adhered to without a lot of effort from the hostel staff.

Summary

This is not a hostel that we would choose to stay at again. However, if you are looking for a party hostel, then this is the place for you!

4  Nice parties and location This hostel is a truly party hostel opposite "Cheeky monkey's," possibly the most hated or loved nightclub in Byron bay. Wet-T shirt, strip competitions, condom blowing, and all other fun stuff going on every night. Very easy to make friends here and the stuff are all good. Free surf boards is very nice but they are a bit short. 7 foot is not beginners board! Four beds dorms are not expensive and kitchen is clean and good. Recommended.  , Sweden ()
4  Great craic Nice place, kept clean, apartment rooms are really cool. Eight people to an apartment with kitchen/TV. Staff friendly and good fun. Loads of stuff organised. Straight across the road from cheeky monkeys.  , Irish ()
