Hostelz.com's Review
X Hostel Alicante, a newly opened branch of the X Party Hostel Varna (Bulgaria), is run by an international team of two young men.

The Location

It is situated northwest off the Alicante city centre, a few blocks away from the Renfe train station. The city beach and the old town are respectively no more than twenty minutes’ brisk walk away. The brown building can be distinguished by its three rows of leaning-forward windows sandwiched between heavy-looking concrete blocks. Although from the outside the building looks somewhat cramped, inside it feels spacious, and there are two rooftop terraces for communal gatherings as well as drying laundered linen.

Rooms and Bathrooms

One of the certain advantages of this brand new hostel is its firm, stable bunk beds and yet unworn mattresses. The new IKEA linen -- provided for free -- is still stainless (even if not necessarily ironed) and there is ample space in the dorms to walk around and to store your belongings. For those sleeping on the top beds, there are small personal hanging shelves available. There are no lockers. The beds are clean, and there are no "surprises" like previous guests’ hair on your mattress.

There are bathrooms with toilets on every floor. Toilet paper is provided. The water pressure in showers is good; the hot water runs twenty-four/seven. The bathrooms are spacious, but the shower cabins are not and have ill-fitted curtains, which mean there are puddles of water all over the floor. However, the overall showering experience is ok -- the water never runs out and never changes from boiling hot to ice cold.

Common Spaces

The guests are able to socialize in the following areas -- the ground floor lounge room-cum-reception that also has two computers with the internet connection, the kitchen on the third floor, and the rooftop terrace. Parties and gatherings of the hostel’s guests are strongly encouraged. There is a whiteboard on the ground floor informing what’s on at the hostel at a particular night. After the initial ice-breaking part at the hostel, the guests often proceed to the city.

There are cooking facilities and a fridge for the guests’ use as well as the usual pots, plates, cutlery. The kitchen itself is rather small and has got only one table. Breakfast is served in the kitchen and features a tea or a coffee from a colourful plastic cup, plus sliced cheap white bread that you can toast and spread with a budget brand jam and/or margarine. If you are lucky you may discover some budget cereal or cakes lying around, all in their original packaging. As this is a party hostel, people tend to get up quite late. If there has been a party the night before, you may find piles of dirty dishes, rubbish, and empty beer bottles instead of the breakfast the next morning.

Summary

The hostel has a feel of a cheerful student dorm about it -- relaxed, unpretentious, informal. The owners are friendly and demonstrate trust in their customers. It is one of the cheaper places to stay in Alicante. For this reason, you should not expect frills like nice breakfast. You will find, however, a comfy bed in an airy dorm and an opportunity to meet people.
