The Hostelz.com Review
The name One World Backpackers sums up this hostel, as everyone comes together to make this place really feel like home. Also, the strong emphasis on recycling and saving the environment is a refreshing change for a hostel. There is even a worm farm in the yard area out the back, which everyone helps out with.
Placed right smack in the centre of Northbridge, the hostel is ten minutes' walk to the city and even shorter into all the bars in Northbridge. Aberdeen Street is actually quite a quite street, though, and the park opposite is ideal for Sunday afternoon football matches.
There are only ten rooms in the hostel, which is a perfect amount -- it doesn't take too long before you get to know everyone. The rooms themselves are clean (like the rest of the hostel) and lockers are provided for valuables. There is no more than eight people to a room and even then there seemed to be ample space for everyone's belongings. The bathrooms are standard and powerful with plenty of hot water. There are also private rooms -- they are obviously a lot more expensive, but well worth it if you need privacy.
The whole hostel has a light and airy feel to it, as sunlight pours through the French windows in the kitchen, there is a huge dining room table where people indulge in the free breakfast in the mornings, and ambient music is played through the speakers. There is also sufficient seating in a BBQ area and a small courtyard area. The television room has plenty of seats, some well used -- they were in the process of replacing them during our stay.
The DVD collection is nonexistent and there are only two computers for internet use, which can be quite frustrating. But you will come to realise that the TV is not important when you stay here -- it is much more pleasurable to sit outside and socialise. They put on organised events every Wednesday, which unusually does not involve getting absolutely hammered -- they range from movie nights, trivia, and even world food night. You have the choice here to either take it easy and laze away your days reading or socialising. It is a subdued but social hostel and as most people work, the party happens mostly at the weekend.
It took me us while to get into the swing of the atmosphere at One World, but after two weeks here we didn't want to leave. It is so clean and comfortable and the staff are always available and willing to help out with any queries.

Unhelpful, unclean When I arrived at the hostel I found out my reservation was canceled, which was my own fault for not sending my creditcardnumbers. The friendly guy behind the reception offered me a good deal for a private room and I took it. When I came back from wondering around there was an other girl behind the reception and she asked me if I wanted to move to an eight bed dorm, cause an other couple had the same problem as I did. Fine by me. So I went to the other room, but the guy who was suppose to leave was still there using the bed (it was at least 19.00), I've been told checkout was at 10.00! When he finally left I asked the girl behind the reception what to do with the dirty sheets. She told me to just throw them in the laundry?!?! Why is she working there??? Then I came back because she didn't gave me new sheets, so I got them. When I was making the bed I found out my sheets where bloody. Seriously that's just disgusting!!! The rest of the working staff were nice and friendly, but i've been in a lot of hostel and this is not how it's supposed to be!! — Anonymous , The Netherlands (2011-02-20)

Couldn't ask for more This is a great place to stay. Firstly, it's on the free bus circuit. The airport bus can drop off and pick up there. Then it's like a home. Many of the guests work there (reception, cleaning). It's almost always clean. So much storage space in the kitchen -- many people live here for months! My room was a little stuffy, and small for 6 people, but had a real homey feel, with a dressing table in there. Everyone is friendly, and introduces themselves, so it's very much like 'home'. A park across the road too, and a huge living room with couches to read on or nap. They even have hammocks you can put out in their yard! — Snosie , Aussie (2010-10-24)

Truly amazing -- after travelling for six years this is by far the best hostel I have stayed in. They understand what a traveler actuallly wants,
even electric blankets. Amazing. — The Best Hostel in the world (2006-09-15)

This Backpackers is really clean. I stayed in an eight-bed dorm. It was one of my favorite places to stay about a fifteen-minute walk to downtown Perth. The staff was friendly and all the guests were fun. I was travelling by myself but met up with some cool people and we became good friends. It's a chilled place and worthwhile. — Amanda from Canada (2006-06-06)

My stay of a few days here turned into practically three months!! The guy who runs the place is really nice and being a family owned establishment made it all the more weloming. I got to meet great people, go to all the local pubs and have an Aussie BBG with no aussies there! It is situated right by the local shops and only a 10 minute walk from central Perth. There is also free transport on the local bus to outside the front door. And Russell Square (a park) is right across the road for all th hot days. The place is kept very clean and there is so much natural light in all the rooms. I loved this place and will return again very soon!!!! — Summer Time (2006-02-04)
I stayed at heaps of different places in 3 trips to Perth; this was a new joint. It's clean but totally lacking in atmosphere, no hot chickies (or boys if you're a chicky) and nothing happening — no communal atmosphere if you like. It's just another house in a city full of old houses with bunk beds in them. But it is in Northridge, so if you want a quiet bed (it was nearly empty when we were there) and to be close to the action it's not so bad. It has friendly owners, if not a tad old fashioned. Love you, but sorry I had to leave you! — The travelling Spectre (2005-07-24)

After seven months in Australia in 2003 I can only say one thing: This was the best hostel I've been to. It has an amazingly friendly staff. It's very easy to meet new people here. If you want to have a kind of family feeling during your travelling and have heaps of fun, too, this is the hostel to go to when you're in Perth! — Roy Richardson (2005-01-30)

This place is very clean, but it feels like a hospital!! It is a bit staid and almost nerdy — there are no get togethers, and no bar or pool, or anything like that, just a clean old house that's been restored. It also didn't have many people staying at it when we there. It was nice enough, but too quiet and not enough people for my liking. — Richard Grace (2005-01-06)

One World was the first hostel in Australia that I stayed in. Whilst there, I met the best people, and my five night stay turned into a whole month. Everyone is so friendly, it's central to most places of interest, and it's very well kept. The recycling is such a good idea, especially considering the amount of alcohol we went through while we were there. It's a great hostel, and I will certainly recommend it to anyone I meet who's planning on going to Perth. — Richard Bellamy (2004-08-30)

A great place to meet people. The owner is friendly. Plus there's good crack. ;) — Gavin Behan (2004-08-22)

This is the place to stay when you want to see how beautifully fellow travelers have drawn on their experience to create elegance for backpackers. Still on par with your typical nightly rates, this place is the one to take photos of and send to your family. It's not big; they'd never want that. It's manageable, not the place to get messy. There's a nice park across the way, and One World Backpackers is located a short distance from the train station on well-lit roads that are frequented and have noodle houses, eateries of all sorts, some places to drink and some places to dance. P.S. Been through Thailand and thought, "oh I'd like to try poi or firesticks?" This is the only place in Perth I know of where you can get them :-) Another P.S. How many hostels have you stayed at which recycle? — Good Old Trev (2004-07-06)
