The Hostelz.com Review
If you’re after a party, Kookaburra Dream Travellers Overnighter Hostel really isn’t for you -- actually, you might want to ask yourself if York is where you really want to go. This is the place to relax, unwind, and take in some history. And although there are a couple of pubs, they’re not likely to hold any late-night raves any time soon.

The Location

The hostel is really close to everything in York (not hard since it’s so small), you can easily walk to several pubs, cafes, and shops. Also, the Avon River runs directly behind the hostel, and York’s famous Swing Bridge is only about 200 meters away from the back door.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are both dorm and private beds available (we stayed in the Mrs. Pyke room, which has been converted from a kitchen and still has the original stove in the corner. The décor of the hostel is what makes it unique. The owners haven’t overdone the renovations on this 1884 beauty -- originally a gentleman’s club -- giving the whole place a cozy, rustic feel.

This might put some people off, as it really is just bare essentials -- the locks to private rooms are basic, there are gaps in between the doors and windows, the boards are unpolished, and there are large, deliberately left cracks in the plaster where the original bricks show through. But many will find this historic charm is just what makes the Kookaburra so appealing. Although the place could do with some dusting, the sheets and shared bathroom were all spotless.

Common Spaces

A continental breakfast is included, the communal kitchen is extremely clean, and there are some really nice indoor and outdoor communal areas to kick back and watch TV or read a book.

Summary

Overall, Kookaburra Dream is a really lovely place to get away for a while, all for a reasonable price.
