My first hostel experience (Oct. 2003)
I have nothing to say but good things about the Market Inn. Decent location, close to major transit but quiet enough in the evenings. They picked us up at the airport at 11 p.m. on a Sunday, had a room waiting for us and we stayed there two weeks.

Absoulutly loved this hostel. it was our home away from home and we made so many new friends. Sioban, mick and Brendan are absolute legends and always looked after us and joined in on the fun. would recomend it to anyone. bring on the 2007 reunion.

I stayed there for three months and can safely say, this hostel is the best ever. Great family feel and everyone who works there makes you feel welcome.Michael and Siobhan who run the place cant do enough to help you. I loved it.

I stayed here for 2 weeks from April - May 2005. Mick, Brendon, and Shivaun had only recently taken over, and the bar had been done up - it was absolutley quality and was really humming both with locals and tourists alike on weekends. While I was there, it was this Irish Guy's 30th birthday (He was Dara's mate). He had been a long term resident at the hostel and he had to head back home a few days after his birthday, so that night the hostel did really well in putting on a great party for him, as I think the owners knew him personally from their own travels overseas. We were up all night with people playing the guitar and everyone getting absolutely trolleyed!! That is something I'll never forget from my trip to Oz. Anyway, the bar is great, but the only reason the hostel only got 4 stars in my opinion is that the rooms are pretty small, and the kitchen is tiny for the number of people cooking!! Nevermind, didn't really need to cook much anyway as I was always drinking in the bar. Incidentally they served the best pint of Guiness there, that I had on the whole trip!!!

Stayed there for nearly three months. If you're looking for a laugh, it's the place to go. Siobhain, Michael, and Brendan are brilliant. More like a house share than hostel. Brilliant.

I stayed in the Market Inn for 6 weeks at the beginning of this year and have to say I had an amazing time. It has been taken over and David is no longer there and it is now Michael, Brendan and Shivon. They had just finished the pub, which is now there and it looked great!!! This hostel is quite a bit smaller than the bigger ones in town but I think it has a more personal touch — they get to know you by name. The kitchen is probably a wee bit too small for the amount of people there but there is a cool outside patio to eat once you have made your dinner. The location is also good because although it is a bit out of town it is only really a 20-minute walk and you are near St. Kilda, too. I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone in Melbourne wanting something a bit more personal in a big city.

It has been a while ago when I visited David and his hostel. I had the best time over there when I was in Australia. I lived there for 2.5 months. I miss my stay there.

I stayed at the Market Inn for 6 months and unless it has changed significantly since I left it is the best hostel in Oz. Up the Market Inn!!!

The good things about this hostel: 1. David (the owner) is friendly and helpful. 2. Very safe. 3. The hostel is opposite South Melbourne Market. The bad: 1. A certain male member of the staff is rude and unhelpful. I asked him whether I could burn a CD in his hostel. He said "I DON'T KNOW!!!" His tone was so rude that I do not want anyone to contact him. 2. Very old hostel. 3. Creaky bed and floor. 4. Smelly room. 5. Far from city. (It's at least a 20-minute walk to the Spensor Street Station and 30-minute walk to the Flinders Street Station.) 6. Tea, coffee and sugar are available 24 hours, but milk is limited. (This means you have to drink tea or coffee without milk.) 7. A free breakfast is available, but limited.
