The Hostelz.com Review
Celtic Backpackers is a small but comfortable hostel in a quiet residential area. It comes close to being a homestay; the owners (Kym, Brent, their daughter Millicent, their dog Bella, and their cat Clyde) live on the ground floor, while most guests have rooms on the floor above.
The Location
The hostel is on Dublin Street, close to Hagley Park. There's a walk of about four blocks to The Shuttle, Christchurch's free central-city bus, and about five blocks to the closest Christchurch Tram stop (Stop 8, Casino) for sightseeing. If you're arriving on the bus or train and you have luggage, you'll need a taxi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Over half the beds in the hostel are dorm beds. There are twelve of them, in two six-bed dorms. Each dorm room has three double-bunked beds. Underneath each bunk are two large metal storage crates, each sized to hold a medium backpack. Access to dorm rooms is by keypad. Single and double rooms are also available; these rooms have keys.
Several toilets and showers are available. There are no private changing area upstairs, but there's space within the shower room to change in front of the shower stalls. Guests staying downstairs share the family's toilet and bathroom, which are very nice.
Common Spaces
There's a kitchen, well-equipped but rather small, upstairs. Again, downstairs guests share the family's kitchen. There's a cozy TV lounge in the upstairs sunporch, and a smaller lounge area indoors with a few chairs and tables. For smokers, there's outdoor seating in the garden.
Reliable Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel at reasonable rates, and two computers are available upstairs for guests' use. Laundry is very inexpensive; use of the washer is free, as is clothesline drying; you must pay to use the dryer.
Most guests, at least when we were there, were young international travelers staying only for a short time -- though the owners say that guests often extend their stays, and that seems quite likely to be true.
Summary
We find Celtic Backpackers to be a friendly, quiet, clean and comfortable place, suited to both young hostelers and families.
