The Hostelz.com Review
If Sunny's Adelaide Backpacker Hostel was any closer to the bus terminal, it would be in it. This is excellent if you are traveling by bus. It is also only a five-minute walk to the heart of the city and less than that to catch the tram that takes you to the beach.

Easily identified from the outside, you enter the property through a small door that leads to the reception. Should you be arriving at an unusual time and already have a reservation, all you need to do is call or email the hostel and they will supply you with the code for the door. The staff are ultra-helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them.

The kitchen area is small and can get crowded around meal times. It could do with some cosmetic repairs but the place was generally kept clean. The mens bathrooms are fine with four toilets and three showers downstairs and more upstairs. The ladies have more of a problem though. There is only toilet and one shower downstairs and the same upstairs (that seems a little strange). They are all clean, though.

You eat inside in the lounge area. This is next to a ping pong table though so watch out for balls. You can also eat outside on picnic tables. There is a small comfy chair area where you can watch the television. There are quite a few people staying long-term (working locally) who seem to have control of that most of the time. Everyone here is really friendly, though, and quite chatty. If you can overlook the few cosmetic letdowns this place is spot on. A real added bonus here is the free pancake breakfast between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Tea and coffee are free all the time.

Not very impressed by the hostel, we stayed here for three nights on a road trip to Perth so it did the job being close to the town, quite considering the location. Seemed to be inhabited by some very strange people and had quite an uninviting atmosphere. Plus side is the owner who i think is a great bloke, very friendly, and whom you could talk to easily.

Its not exactly the Ritz in that the place is a bit shabby and unclean, but it was one of the more friendly hostels i stayed at in Oz. They had a pool table but no cue to play it with! the staff seemed quite nice though and it is just round the corner from the bus station.

Sunny's was very friendly. While some rooms require a bit of renovation the hostel was cleaned each day. Food didn't go missing from the fridge and the kitchen was kept clean. My only complaint was that the flor boards in the dorms were noisy.

We had actually booked to stay here, but the receptionist had not arrived for the morning shift so we let ourselves in and had a look around. (Yep, the security is that good!) On inspection of one of the dorms and kitchen, we made a quick exit and stayed somewhere else. Enter at your own risk!

I was originally going to merely pass through Adelaide after hearing from Bondi backpackers that it was a waste of time. What I came across though was the best hostel I've ever stayed in during my travels in Australia. The close-knit family of travelers, exceptional staff (whom I now name among my closest friends) and warm atmosphere was enough to keep me in the city for well over four months. John the owner, possibly the coolest true-blue Aussie you'll ever meet, helped me get a job straight away. He even fixed my old car and would invite me in to the office for a "yarn" whenever I passed by. An absolute gem of a place. Don't miss it for the world.
