I've stayed at the Blue Galah a couple of times -- once for a prolonged period of several weeks in 2003, and again for about a week in 2005. The location is superb if you like it central, and the staff are friendly and helpful. However, the facilities leave a lot to be desired. The beds give the impression they're from the cheapest range the owners could possibly get, and the ropey old chairs and sofas in the communal areas are distinctly average. The toilets and bathroom areas are kept clean but the entire place feels like it's in need of an upgrade. If this is your first introduction to staying in a hostel, you could do worse, but once you've experienced the upper end of this kind of accommodation, it puts the Blue Galah into an unfavourable spotlight.

wholeheartedly the most average stay i've experienced. indifferent staff, overpriced bar, and by bar i mean fridge! overpriced internet all garnished with the fact that there's sod all to do in adelaide, just don't waste your time.

This is obviously a new hostel, it was clean and well furnished. However the room was a bit small for the price. As for the staff it was a mixed bag, some were nice, one guy there was a bit rude.

It was clean and in a really good loction. But for the price the rooms were way too small with too many people put in them.

I want to thank all the staff and managers at the Blue Galah Backpackers Hostel for one of the warmest and friendliest experiences of my Australian holiday. I have been travelling for 11 months and nearly finished my trip. And I have stayed in dozens of hostels but none were as nice as this one. The location was unbeatable, right next to all the shops. There was a convenience store downstairs which was open 24/7, plus I could walk to the markets in Victoria Square and the museum and the art gallery. Basically everything was on my doorstep. There is nothing more annoying than getting to a hostel only to find that you have to walk for miles before you get anything. Not this one!!! Hot long showers for as long as I wanted and a kitchen with heaps of stuff to cook on and with. We used the bar every night and sat out on the balcony, which was a little cold but what do you expect in the middle of winter. Come on everybody I recommend this place. My only problem was that I was already booked to leave so I did not have a chance to stay longer. But when I come back to Australia again I will definitely stay here again. ***** 5 stars guys, great job, and keep up the excellent service. The other thing I noticed was that there was always someone cleaning. Easily the cleanest hostel I've been in.

This hostel is clean and tidy with a great location. However, it does seem to have a large number of students as residents, which gives the hostel a pretty subdued atmosphere. The breakfast is okay. The staff are fine but the manager/owner always appears to feel like he's doing you a favor for the simplest of requests. Plus, if you do negotiate a better rate, get it in writing. My rate was increased the longer I stayed!

The hostel was good, right in the middle of the centre, the cheapest I could find, and breakfast was included (though only really basic!). It was clean and has a balcony. But the washing machine is very expensive and the internet access was very slow!
