The Hostelz.com Review
In high season, Hostal Montezuma is one of the better hostels in Montanita to meet people at if you are a solo traveler.
The Location
Hostal Montezuma is located in the centre of the small town of Montanita and less than a hundred meters from the huge, clean beach. In the streets around the hostel are many bars; cafes; restaurants; and other backpacker-required services like tour agencies, laundries, internet cafes, the bus terminal, and surfboard rental shops. Bicycles are also available for rent. The streets around the hostel are full of artisans selling crafts and musicians busking. The hostel is located within minutes walk from the bus terminal. The hostel is secure as the staff are always at the bar area that doubles up as the reception area.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are spacious but quite dark -- the wooden features add character to the hostel. All of the beds have mosquito nets, but there is a slight smell off these nets. The rooms are slightly sandy (due to proximity of beach) and were dusty during our stay (due to construction work nearby; top floor rooms were also being renovated at this time). There are plenty of power sources in the rooms, but unfortunately no security lockers in the rooms. On weekends there may be some noise in the rooms at the front of the building from the bars nearby.
Bathrooms are clean but hot water doesn't have strong pressure. Some rooms are ensuite and some use shared bathrooms in the corridors.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a small TV room where you can watch DVDs; there is also a small selection of books for exchange. At the front of the hostel is a bar/cafe area. Here, and in the TV room, there is information available on local activities and other tours around Ecuador available from here. Each morning, there is a light breakfast served in the cafe, which is included in the room price. There is also an internet cafe in the building, but this is run as a separate business and neither internet access nor Wi-Fi are included in the price.
There are three floors above the ground floor and hammocks hang on the balconies of each floor at the front of the building giving a view down the street. There is only a very small view of the beach from the balconies.
Summary
Hostal Montezuma is a decent hostel to stay at with a good location. A word of warning though -- don't stay here if you are put off by a little dirt.

Best place according to the price Montezuma is Montañita. Its the only big hostel still in the typical Montañita beach life stile. Nice rooms, nice stuff and the best ubication. We love the lightly dark illumination and the natural style of the hostel.
Its not a big-name hotel, thanks god; such boring places we arent looking for. Specially for women it is important to take a Hostel in the center. Walking back through the dark to the outside parts of the center at 4 o clock in the morning when party is over is not recommended. Even if Montañita is a quite secure place, but you never know. They got also permanent Security, always water when the hostels around got already dry showers, it happened during the last water crisis. We spent a great week in Montezuma Hostel and can recommend it to anybody who is young, wild and maybe a little crazy, and wants to meet interesting people from all over the world. Montezuma is the absolute "Inn-Hostel". — pauline , french (2011-04-20)
