Hostelz.com's Review
Saphaipae Hostel is one of the cheaper hostels in Bangkok and a good value for your money. It is relatively well located and perfect for groups or couples traveling. It is, however, not a social hostel so it's not very good for solo travelers or groups wanting to mingle with others.

The Location

The hostel is located a short walk away from the Surasak BTS station, in a quiet part of Silom. It is very easily accessible by public transportation from the Suvarnabhumi (BKK) airport. You will need to take a cab or public transportation and a cab to the Don Mueang airport. The same applies to the Northern Bus terminal.

Public bus #15, a short walk from the hostel, can take you to the palace or Khaosan Road. It is very cheap, or sometimes free, and you'll avoid the hassle of dealing with a tuk tuk driver, and possible scams. However, in the afternoon traffic it can take several hours more than it should to get you back to Silom. A combination of BTS and bus would also get you to and from the palace or Khaosan Road.

The hostel is located in an area that does not have many businesses, and most hostels or bars are at least a ten-minute walk away. The area is not otherwise interesting either.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms and bathrooms are kept very clean and look new and modern. The bunk beds are sturdy and each have an outlet, a light, and a little shelf. There is a large locker for every guest. There is air conditioning that works very well, but for some reason it keeps the rooms very humid. We stayed in two different rooms and both times coming back in the evening not only was our towel still moist from the morning shower, but also our pyjamas were slightly humid. Otherwise, the rooms are great, with plenty of room to change and store your things.

The bathrooms are also very clean, with the toilets in separate stalls from the showers. There is hot water and the shower stalls have enough space and hooks to keep your clothes dry. There are enough sinks, toilets, and showers for it not to be crowded in the mornings.

Common Spaces

There is a large common space on the ground floor that includes a bar, a pool table, a few computers, and several couches and tables with chairs. There is also a restaurant, but it's quite expensive for the quality and quantity of the food. There are always a few people in the common areas, but they are usually on their computers. The hostel's atmosphere is pretty much dead, and after a few nights we went to a different, more expensive hostel just to be able to meet some people. The staff are not very friendly and make no effort to engage people in any activities. It is, however, an inexpensive hostel by Bangkok standards, so if you're just looking for a clean bed and shower for a night or two, it's perfect.

Summary

This is a great hostel to stay in if you're traveling with somebody or if you're just spending one night in Bangkok on your way to the south or north. It is clean and inexpensive and has all the amenities you's expect. It is however not a social hostel, so if you're traveling alone, you might want to install Solitaire on your laptop.

4   Amazing facilities Everything is good except one tiny thing -- they don't provide hair dryer in male's bathroom, and the hair dryer in female's bathroom was broken during our stay. Otherwise, this is one of the best hostels I've stayed ever.  , age 30, Taiwan ()
4   Amazing facilities This hostel was practically a hotel. Did not have the feel of a hostel, except for the fact that there were bunk beds. It is massive, with several floors of rooms, each with huge bathrooms that are very clean. Overall, an excellent hostel; the only complaint I have is that since it is so big, everyone is doing his or her own thing. It didn't seem like the people were as friendly and open as other people I had met in other hostels.  , age 26, USA ()
5   MY FAV HOSTEL EVER i love saphaipae since the first time i found it on internet. i've stayed there twice, on Aug 2012 and Dec 2012, and i always recommend this hostel to all my friends who will travel to bangkok. saphaipae has everything i need. good price, close to BTS Surasak, clean and comfy large dormitory with comfy bed and clean sheet; large and clean toilet & shower. it has almost 24hrs cafe with nice foods (not that expensive too). one thing, i really impressed with the dining service, once on Aug 2012, i was totally exhausted, late check in and dont wanna go out for dinner. the cafe is just closed, but the chef (might be) saw me and feel kinda pity and want to cook one simple meals for my dinner, thats something! well, so far saphaipae is my fav hostel ever, and i would like to recommend it to all my friends.  , Indonesia ()
