The Hostelz.com Review
Surfers Paradise is a large tourist town with plenty of bars/restaurants, a long sandy beach, and a couple of huge shopping centres.

Islander Backpackers is part of a huge resort that is joined onto the Islander Hotel. Because of this it doesn't have the typical 'hostel' feel. There are, however, numerous free facilities including a swimming pool, spa/sauna, tennis, squash, and a large restaurant. The resort is conveniently located next to the coach station and is right in the centre of Surfers Paradise.

There are many dorms, varying in size from 4 to 10 people. All rooms are ensuite with little TVs and fridges, lockers and telephone for incoming calls. There is a large kitchen and the hostel charges a deposit of $10 (which you get back) for the 'Kitchen Box', which consists of cutlery, cup, plate and bowl. The kitchen is also fully equipped and regularly stocked with all utensils and cooking equipment (i.e. bowls, whisks, bbq mate, can openers, peelers, pots, pans, etc.). There are also laundry facilities and a large TV room where guests can chill out.

Overall, this is a large hostel with great facilities, however a bit more attention could be paid to cleanliness and maintenance. Whilst some rooms are fine, others are in need of modernization.

It was the most comfortable place to relax and enjoy in the pool especially at night with all the pretty city lights and its surroundings. The Islander staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. And neat rooms with your own toilet and showers, excellent!

yep the islander is the best hostel in surfers -- probably one of the best in Aussie. if you're travelling in Oz, you should use this website as a reference for places to stay -- or not to stay. beware that these places do exist! I'm goin back to Surfers soon and will go direct to the Islander. it's a great location -- walking distance to all central Surfers and the best beaches, the hostel is clean, staff are friendly and helpful.

I had an unforgettable time staying @ the islander i met someone who i know i will spend the rest of my life with, in Australia ... I loved it!! and anyone who has the chance should stay here! it truly is a great experience and it is not like staying in a hostel yet, more like a hotel :-)

Good place to stay for a night or a week. It's just like a hotel only it happens to have bunk beds in the rooms. Free lockers and a fridge in the room are nice. Balconies (in all rooms) have a view. Next door the bus station and just across the street from the most happening place in Surfers!

This was definitely just like a hotel! One annoying thing is that you have to pay $10 for a plate, cup and cutlery and the kitchen is very poorly stocked. No knives, ladles, chopping boards, etc. We ate out most nights, as it was just easier than finding something we could cook with no equipment! And I didn't have $10 cash on me and they wouldn't accept my credit card as deposit so I had to go all the way to an ATM before I could have my plate! Very annoying...

I stayed here for a week with my best friend, and I have never stayed in a better hostel. It has a great location, and private bathroom, and outside balcony! (Well, our room had one.) It has a beautiful overlook of the wonderful world-wide-known Gold Coast!!! It was only a second's walk to everything!! I will go back when I return to Gold Coast. Great service, great people, excellent environment, and minutes from the best nightclub in the world — Melba's!!! :) I can't wait to return!!!

Here you have a fridge, TV, your own bathroom and shower, and your own free locker in your room. This hostel has a nice kitchen and movies every night. And it's close to everything; right in town and by the beach!

I had the most amazing time here! I met some amazing people and had the time of my life! Whether it was lying by the pool, hanging out in the rooms or chilling on the deck talking to everyone from all over the world, it was amazing! Thanks, Islander. You guys are the best!

The double rooms here are great. This hostel is more like a hotel than a backpackers. It has a good pool and good kitchen, but some of the staff were obnoxious. You'd think they were competing to see who could be rudest to the guests.
