Hostelz.com's Review
Surfers Paradise is a large tourist town with plenty of bars/restaurants, a long sandy beach, and a couple of huge shopping centres.

Islander Backpackers is part of a huge resort that is joined onto the Islander Hotel. Because of this it doesn't have the typical 'hostel' feel. There are, however, numerous free facilities including a swimming pool, spa/sauna, tennis, squash, and a large restaurant. The resort is conveniently located next to the coach station and is right in the centre of Surfers Paradise.

There are many dorms, varying in size from 4 to 10 people. All rooms are ensuite with little TVs and fridges, lockers and telephone for incoming calls. There is a large kitchen and the hostel charges a deposit of $10 (which you get back) for the 'Kitchen Box', which consists of cutlery, cup, plate and bowl. The kitchen is also fully equipped and regularly stocked with all utensils and cooking equipment (i.e. bowls, whisks, bbq mate, can openers, peelers, pots, pans, etc.). There are also laundry facilities and a large TV room where guests can chill out.

Overall, this is a large hostel with great facilities, however a bit more attention could be paid to cleanliness and maintenance. Whilst some rooms are fine, others are in need of modernization.

4   Clean and good service I stayed in one of the female dorms. It was good, except they allocated you beds which I didn't like because if your roommate checked out the next day and they have a better bed, you can't move. However, they were very accommodating when I said I wanted to switch rooms because of really irritating roommates. Location is great, right in the centre of town. Good work guys.  , age 23, Australia ()
5   Clean and tidy, fun and friendly great place to stay. THE CLOSEST HOSTEL to SURFERS PARADISE, THE BEACH, THE COACH STATION. It was clean inside, i saw three rooms and they were spotless. backpackers get to use the spa/tennis courts for FREE! the rooms have balconies, bathrooms, and air-con. its perfect. Its like a hotel, but with the love a real backpackers. well done islander you've created something special.  , CANADA!!!!!! ()
1   Dirty I stayed here in february and found this place dirty! I was in the same room in three nights and it had dirt in the corners and bathroom and none of the cleaners did any effort in cleaning it up. kitchen was not good either.  , norway ()
4   Class This place is basically a hotel with some dorm rooms. Backpackers have full use of hotel facilities which was class. Rooms were very clean, kitchen was a bit grubby but overall it's a class place. Great location too.  , Irish ()
4  This is a pretty neat hostel if you plan to go clubbing a lot. It's right in the thick of things, opposite the Hard Rock Cafe, and 5 minutes from the beach. It is in an old 1960s hotel that hasn't been renovated -- hence the rooms are "quaint" and "chinzy," but the rooms come with fridges, TV, telephones, and -- almost uniquely for a backpackers -- room service! The pool is tiny, but good. The bar is a bit dull, with a lot of old men in it, and there are better options nearby. However there are major problems with the staff: They really seem to hate backpackers, and will do anything to avoid being helpful to them. Also beware -- I paid with a UK credit card, and my bill was automatically transferred into GBP at a ruinous exchange rate, without asking me if I'd like to pay in AUD. CHECK your visa card slips!  , UK ()
5  It was the most comfortable place to relax and enjoy in the pool especially at night with all the pretty city lights and its surroundings. The Islander staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. And neat rooms with your own toilet and showers, excellent!  ()
5  yep the islander is the best hostel in surfers -- probably one of the best in Aussie. if you're travelling in Oz, you should use this website as a reference for places to stay -- or not to stay. beware that these places do exist! I'm goin back to Surfers soon and will go direct to the Islander. it's a great location -- walking distance to all central Surfers and the best beaches, the hostel is clean, staff are friendly and helpful.  ()
5  I had an unforgettable time staying @ the islander i met someone who i know i will spend the rest of my life with, in Australia ... I loved it!! and anyone who has the chance should stay here! it truly is a great experience and it is not like staying in a hostel yet, more like a hotel :-)  ()
