Surfers Paradise is a large tourist town with plenty of bars/restaurants, a long sandy beach, and a couple of huge shopping centres.
Islander Backpackers is part of a huge resort that is joined onto the Islander Hotel. Because of this it doesn't have the typical 'hostel' feel. There are, however, numerous free facilities including a swimming pool, spa/sauna, tennis, squash, and a large restaurant. The resort is conveniently located next to the coach station and is right in the centre of Surfers Paradise.
There are many dorms, varying in size from 4 to 10 people. All rooms are ensuite with little TVs and fridges, lockers and telephone for incoming calls. There is a large kitchen and the hostel charges a deposit of $10 (which you get back) for the 'Kitchen Box', which consists of cutlery, cup, plate and bowl. The kitchen is also fully equipped and regularly stocked with all utensils and cooking equipment (i.e. bowls, whisks, bbq mate, can openers, peelers, pots, pans, etc.). There are also laundry facilities and a large TV room where guests can chill out.
Overall, this is a large hostel with great facilities, however a bit more attention could be paid to cleanliness and maintenance. Whilst some rooms are fine, others are in need of modernization.
