The Hostelz.com Review
Beary Nice! by a beary good hostel is a quiet and chilled hostel in bustling Chinatown. The place is decorated with teddy bears, and has quite a homey feel to it. It’s clean and bright, and quite modern in its decoration.
The Location
This hostel is located in the heart of Chinatown, which is a good base for exploring the rest of Singapore on foot or by using the city’s efficient transport system. Finding the hostel is easy as it’s very close (about a minute’s walk) to the Chinatown MRT station. It’s also on Smith Street where hawker stalls set up in the evening; but for better value food, head to the Maxwell Road Food Centre around the corner, opposite the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. The hostel is above a dim sum restaurant, which is a good breakfast stop before sightseeing.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms, whilecompact, are cleverly laid out with bunk beds tucked around corners or with curtains partitioning the bunks, so you don’t realise that there are ten beds in the room. They are also air-conditioned, and linen is provided. The dorms are accessed by a security card and feel secure; and each bed has its own locker next to it, which is large enough to fit your rucksack. Bring your own padlock. The beds are comfy and spacious, and each bed has its own light, plug socket, and shelf, which is a huge bonus.
There is a male and female bathroom and each contains two showers with shower gel provided (with hooks to hang your clothes and enough space to change in the showers) and a toilet, plus hanging space to dry your clothes/towels -- the bathrooms were clean the whole time we were there.
Common Spaces
There is an open plan reception, kitchen, and lounge area which are bright and clean. There is a breakfast bar where you can help yourself to the free breakfast (cereal, bread, jam, tea, coffee), and have a chat with fellow travelers. Hot drinks are available for you to help yourself to twenty-four hours a day. There’s free internet and Wi-Fi, as well as a TV with DVDs and books. The whole hostel is non-smoking, and there’s no outside space. Our impressions are that it’s a fairly quiet, subdued place, and maybe not the best place for meeting people; but this could be down to Singapore in general, as lots of people seemed to be passing through.
Summary
We think this is a great place to stay in Singapore -- the location is excellent when coming from the airport, and it is also a good base for exploring the city; plus the hostel itself is bright and clean with modern décor, making it a pleasant place to stay.
